ORIGINAL POSTER
Just watching a YouTuber who says he's lived in Bangkok for the last 10 years, and doesn't have a Thai bank account?! Is this a wind up, it seems most of the posts on here are about the importance of opening a Thai bank account?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation discusses the experiences of expats living in Thailand without a Thai bank account, suggesting that alternatives like Wise, Revolut, and foreign bank accounts can suffice for day-to-day living. Many respondents share their personal experiences of managing finances in Thailand, including using credit cards and cash, and some express skepticism about the necessity of a local bank account. Moreover, the thread also touches on visa requirements that may relate to having a Thai bank account and the challenges some individuals face in opening one.

You won't get a Visa without one...
Al ********
25 years coming and going sometimes multi entry non 0 visas. I still don’t open a bank in Thailand. I use wise and atm that reimburses atm fees.
Khun ******
nah, cash is king
Rkd ********
Why on earth do you need a bank account? Why is this a problem?
Tae'lur ********
Doesn’t sound far fetched. I usually pay for things with baht. I pay rent by doing transfers on Wise, my friends do the same.
Mary ********
We lived there for 9 years and didn't have a thai bank account. Now the renewal of your visa requires a certain amount deposited in a thai bank account every month In a certain way.
Niall ********
I don’t see why you wouldn’t open one. Easier to pay for things with scan and avoid the ridiculous fees withdrawing cash, plus having more bank accounts isn’t necessarily a bad thing
Albert ********
@Niall *******
im slightly disabled in my dominant hand from a stroke. I would prefer to have it done if forms are required to be filled out and I can afford to
Niall ********
@Albert *******
use an agent if needed, they’ll do everything for you. Minimal forms to fill out from what I remember
Albert ********
@Niall *******
I recently renewed my DL and it took me what seemed like forever to complete one form. The lady noticed I was struggling and filled out the rest. It would look like my 6 year old granddaughter tried to fill it out . I hope to find a lot of treatment for it in Thailand and get back some ability to write legibly

Easy enough to do. But most YouTubers scraping the bottom of the barrel of financial existence.

I don't know where u come from but in Europe you loose your bank account after 5 years living and written abroad. So that makes a thai account quite important, don't you think? I get my pension directly in my thai bank account from europe and it works quite fine, takes 3 days but good exchange rate.
Andreas ********
@Borune **********
i lived 7 years in Singapore and never lost my German bank account.
Todd *********
@Borune **********
‘in Europe’ …. Ummm wrong
Borune ***********
@Todd ********
that is if you live outside Europe offcourse. Maybe wrong for you now just wait and see my friend.
Dennis *********
@Borune **********
why do you lose your account?
Borune ***********
@Dennis ********
because I didn't live in sweden and that was where I did have my account since 45 years, it's not a big deal, now I'm ok with my thai account and I get my money every month so screw them. I just wanted you to know that this things happens every day and for you "lucky" guys who say wrong just wait and see. Big brother wants to know. You're a lucky guy Andreas. Keep some debt in your bank then you can keep it, just an advise.

all UK Bank accounts say you must be a UK citizen if you are claiming interest on your accounts

Why because the government wants TAX on your interest

So yes if you are abroad non dom whatever then they will close your account
Kim ********
@Graham ****
ive heard same thing about you have to live in the uk to keep your bank account and have to register with an address... so i know others that use an address to show the .uk bank there still there ... but lived in thai over 3 years and still transfer from uk to thai bank account.... baffled by what happens when the UK expiry dates up with UK bank account 🤔

I spent 6 years living in Panama and never lost my US accounts. Do not expect to lose them after I eventually move to Thailand.

From the visa agent I talked with yesterday, if anyone wants an agent to or was in the process of having an agent opening a bank account, they are no longer able to. She said she came back from vacation and was blind by this move

@Albert *******
i opened yesterday one myself with kasikorn Bank. Some bank still open bank accounts for foreigners without much problems.

Paspoort, visa, marriage certificate and proof of adress.

The first time I got charged 220 baht for withdrawal I got a Thai bank account. Now I have 3.

This is the 21st century. You can use your card and money anywhere in the world you want 🙈.

true but only the banks profit then, cash is king

only about $60US a year if you take out 30.000 baht a month ....not worth worrying about

I use crypto to get US dollars in cash and then I exchange it whenever I need. I also use a crypto debit card and my personal credit card from my home country which has zero forex charges. Cash is king.

Only inconvenience is not able to pay via QR code at vending machines.

I’ve spent 6 winters in Thailand since 2010. Always from November till May. I’ve had two retirement visas. (OA). Never opened a bank account. I use credit cards, where possible, cash is easy to get and bank transfers can be used to pay things like rent. It’s eminently possible.
John *********
I live in Thailand for 6 months of each year. I do have a Thai bank account that has the required amount deposited to keep my visa valid. I never withdraw money and don’t have the bank app on my phone. So, it’s almost like I don’t have a Thai bank account either.
Lisa *******
how much cash can you bring into thailand ?
James ******
@Lisa ******
upto $20,000 before you have to declare

It would depend on what visa he has

I’m on DTV and I still get denied for opening up a bank account here. I really don’t need a Thai bank account tho

No need for a thai bank account… Wise, Revolut, foreign account are easily sufficient for everyday living in this country.
David ***********
@Dany *******
Everyone forgets about the role that PromptPay plays. It’s important yet difficult without a Thai bank account. TagThai supports this yet doesn’t work well in my experience. It’s slow and I can only pay 20% of vendors. TrueMoney may support it better, but I need to report for my first 90 days before I get better PromptPay capability.
Todd *********
@David **********
cash has always been the way. Still no need for prompt pay if you don’t want
Tae'lur ********
Dany ********
@David **********
you dont need promptpay at all. cash is king and works perfectly fine. i dont see where its really much help. i allways have sufficient cash. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ and its not like you will get robbed everywhere 😅 so not even a safety feature…
David ***********
@Dany *******
Because physical paper is a hassle. Digital is more convenient and I’m moving from cash. Eventually, we all will.
Peter ******
He can just use his home Countries bank account for deposits and withdrawals , no need for a Thai bank account
Luc ************
Wise and Revolut. Good enough.
Brian ********
Other than paying by QR code, is there a benefit?
Philip **********
@Brian *******
many places only accept QR code so it's a big benefit
Brian ********
@Philip *********
Do you mean that they only accept QR, or only QR and Cash? I’ve never come across anywhere that QR only, so kinda curious.
Philip **********
@Brian *******
yes once cash was a problem but they managed to get change from someone else. Correct money would have been ok. Once you start using QR codes you don't want to stop, too easy
Andrew *******
@Philip *********
QR Codes are a low tech second best solution that kinda sucks v say Apple Pay
Jim ********
@Andrew ******
QR code is more universally accepted in Thailand. You can use this with street vendors, markets etc who would never use Apple or Google Pay. We're not talking technology, we're talking convenience
Andrew *******
@Jim *******
also, the issue is why would those street vendors “never use it” when they’ll use QR codes. You can literally accept tap via your phone, it’s the same level of tech but better.
Jim ********
@Andrew ******
You'd need to ask them why they accept QR code but not Apple Pay. I just know they don't, but not the reasons why!
Andrew *******
@Jim *******
it’s entirely a function of Thai Banks.
Jim ********
@Andrew ******
Whatever it is, it works and is accepted at more outlets than cash, so it's obviously got something going for it 👍
Andrew *******
@Jim *******
It works but it’s crap. My point is a simple one - we have farang (who should know better) waxing lyrical about the QR code system instead of pointing out that it’s a second tier crap system that Thailands neighbours don’t use :)

It’s almost like it’s advocates must be old & retired or from the US where they still use cheques (checks) :p
Jim ********
Jim ********
@Andrew ******
You obviously have little knowledge on the QR PromptPay system. There's more young Thai people using it than oldies. Not everywhere accepts True Wallet, so the youngsters use QR. They certainly don't use cash!
Andrew *******
@Jim *******
FFS you are a bit dim. I know who uses it. The reference to foreigners was old foreigners might not realise how much better systems elsewhere are because they are old. Or stupid.

Thais have no option but to adopt QR codes because their banks don’t offer the better options - so of course they use it.

I use tap more than QR codes because I can because I have foreign cards as well as Thai cards. Watching me use Tap at say Starbucks v a Thai using QR codes is a perfect time and motion study. Mine takes a second, there’s can take a while depending on which App, which phone and any issues with their QR code reader or the merchants system.

Again, It’s a simple point, the system is second rate. Those of us used to a better system should make that point. Which I am.
Andrew *******
@Jim *******
I understand they use it, it’s just crap. “Once you start using QR code you don’t want to stop” is what I was responding to.

I use them but never if there is an alternate option because it’s a shit system. I spend half my time in Australia where you just tap (apple/google pay) for literally everything and where bank transfers (to pay anyone) are instant. It’s vastly superior without the idiocy of faulty cameras, misread codes, different banking apps and the myriad linked loyalty programs with different QR codes. QR code payments in Thailand often increase the time over cash v proper tech which vastly reduces time.

I just wish Thai banks weren’t so low rent that they’d actually embrace modernity. 🤷🏻‍♂️
Philip **********
@Andrew ******
works well directly through the banking system with no fees. Anyone with a Thai bank account can easily give money to each other.
Andrew *******
@Philip *********
Yes. It works. It’s just shit compared with alternate systems that work much better.
Perry *******
@Brian *******
Reduced ATM FEES.
Andi ***********
You can have a Wise account or similar.
Matty ****
I've lived here for 7 years. I have one Thai bank account but I almost never use it.

I know people here longer that don't have one.

The maximum insurance is only 1 million baht. So you can't give a large amount of money in there.. I keep only what I need for the LLC and regulations.

Even shopping I use Western debit cards. Good Western banks will refund any fees
Kim ********
@Matty ***
yep, my USAA account refunds all atm fees too. Love it.
Sue *********
@Matty ***
Charles Schwab Investor Checking and Fidelity Cash Management accounts both refund all ATM transaction fees. Schwab refunds at the end of each month and Fidelity refunds within a day or two

Huh??

What do you mean?? Fees refunded?? Never heard of that?

Is this an American thing??
