Has anyone successfully applied for the Workation DTV from the Los Angeles Consulate after holding an METV or ED visa?

Hi! I’m curious if anyone has traveled back to the US to apply for the Workation DTV, particularly through the Los Angeles Consulate.

For some background, I originally entered Thailand on an METV before transitioning to an ED visa, which is valid until late April. I’m now planning to return to LA to apply for the Workation DTV in April, as I have a remote contract with a US based company that has no restrictions on where I can work from. I’ll also be able to provide the necessary proof of funds and am aware of the additional documentation requirements, including the FBI background check.

Although I feel fairly confident that I meet the requirements, I’m still anxious about the possibility of being denied after traveling all the way back to the US specifically to apply. I know the changes are relatively recent, but I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has gone through the process, especially those who previously held an METV/ED visa and/or applied through the LA Consulate.

Sawadee, I live here and I see many people do same route as you. Going back to LA to apply for Workation DTV is common after METV and ED visa. LA consulate is okay with remote contract from US company if you show company letter, contract, pay slips and proof of funds, plus FBI check. Previous METV or ED does not hurt if you finished school and have no overstay.

Anxiety is normal because you fly far. LA usually approves in one to two weeks if papers are clean. Make sure your ED visa is cancelled or ending before you apply and you are outside Thailand when you submit. Bring bank proof of last three months and letter that you can work from anywhere.

You could consider reading a book or two before your trip. I’d recommend Unlock Thailand by Isla Rey on Amazon, it includes all the info and insights you need. You should check it out. A very good companion 👌.

Applying from LA with a US remote contract is a classic case, should be fine. Just make sure the contract or a letter says you can work from abroad, and that your bank statement shows the 500k THB.
