Amazing how you ask that question….it implies that you dont plan to leave Thailand and will buy a cheap throw away exit ticket to appease thai immigration.

Paulccfc Williams They do not want one who has an onward ticket, in case the extension gets denied?

Paulccfc Williams If Thailand doesn't want them why don't they plug the hole? I'm coming for 11 weeks and my choices are a Visa exempt plus 1900 baht extention or an METV which for me is $280 CAD. I will spend at least $6,000 during that time. So my choices are $280 or $80 plus an onward ticket. Who throws away almost $200? Am I one of those tourists they're trying to get rid of?

A bit of a stupid reply

You can come in on a tourist visa for 60 days, which is extendable by 30 days to 90 total and some embassies will want your exit ticket <60 days when you can stay for 90.

Nothing is implied, it’s all a dance to satisfy whatever compliance they fart into existence

NT Benzie it is not misinformation. It is the problem of airlines staff or poor management.

When a passenger boards a flight without a return or onward ticket and is later refused entry by the destination government, the airline’s responsibilities are fairly well defined under international aviation rules and national immigration laws.

---

✈️ Airline Responsibilities

• Repatriation obligation: The airline must arrange and pay for the passenger’s return flight to the point of origin or another country that will accept them. Airlines often try to recover these costs from the passenger afterward.

• Fines and penalties: Many countries (e.g., the U.S., Australia) impose fines on airlines that transport passengers who lack proper entry documents. This is why airlines are strict about requiring proof of onward travel.

• Care while awaiting removal: Depending on local law, airlines may be responsible for providing meals or accommodation until the passenger is deported, though immigration authorities usually control the situation.

• Ticket and refund policy: Airlines typically deny refunds if a passenger is refused entry, since the failure to meet immigration requirements is considered the passenger’s responsibility.

• Document verification: Airlines are obligated to check that passengers hold valid visas and onward tickets before boarding. If they fail to do so, they bear liability.

---

⚖️ Legal Framework

• IATA Resolution 830a: Requires airlines to ensure passengers have the necessary travel documents.

• National immigration laws: For example, the U.S. Immigration and Nationality Act makes airlines financially responsible for transporting inadmissible passengers back.

• Conditions of Carriage: Airlines’ contracts with passengers clearly state that travelers are responsible for having valid entry documents.

NT Benzie What mis information. Almost always airline that will check. Immigration can check if they want but airlines ask more oftern.

not a vacation for me either. I live in Thailand 6 months out of the year the other 6 I work oil and gas. Before I got my long term visa the airline would ask for return ticket but I fly in thru the Narita Haneda Japan route.

Don McGee Because it wasn’t a Vacation. I moved my family to Thailand and traveled around South East Asia. Never been asked coming back into Thailand. I buy one way tickets because I have no timeline of how long I’m staying.

The TDAC doesn't require onward travel. You don't even have to fill out that section as it's optional. Though if you enter as a tourist it is technically one of the entry requirements.
