If I go to Vietnam, does that automatically cancel my visa and work permit? A family member wants to travel with me but the rules to travel in Thailand are beyond confusing. I also honestly feel my Thai school will not allow me to take time off for travel. Anyone have mid/post covid experience traveling between countries while employed at a Thai school?

TLDR : Answer Summary
Traveling to Vietnam will not automatically cancel your Thai visa and work permit; however, without a re-entry permit, your extension of stay may be voided. This means you could face complications upon your return to Thailand, potentially leading to fines if you overstay. It's important to check your visa type and confirm whether you need a re-entry permit to secure your status upon returning. Additionally, any travel planned should align with your school's policies, as they may not allow time off for such trips.

The [land] borders are closed and will remain so for the foreseeable future.

The land borders are closed. The air borders are open. The OP can not travel by land directly from Thailand to Vietnam because Vietnam does not share a land border to Thailand.

I do not know the OP's purpose for entering Vietnam, and the reason why is outside the group's scope.

and Vietnam is CLOSED to foreigner tourists at this time. Discussion of a Phuket sandbox type of plan is under consideration... on an island of Vietnam but without any access to the whole of Vietnam for added travel.

And as this is Thai Visa Advice ....the OP needs to consider the consequences of leaving Thailand during COVID times.

I thought borders are still closed. If open ypu need a re-entry permit so your ectension stays valid. Wait for the holidays till the school has holidays.

Borders are not closed. Only the land borders are limited with foreigners (not from neighboring countries) to cross. Traveling by air (or sea to Thailand) is possible. You just need to meet all requirements to enter both countries.

The borders are technically closed, however for this post I'm assuming the poster has a method to enter and leave Vietnam as normal. This isn't Vietnam Visa/ Travel Advice, and I'm not following Vietnam's COVID-19 situation that much.

I am 99% sure you do NOT have a visa, but instead an extension of stay based on employment (check your passport).

No. If you do not get a re-entry permit, it will VOID your existing extension of stay, but not CANCEL your existing extension of stay.

A voided extension of stay will require you to apply for another extension of stay using the same paperwork, however, does not formally cancel the extension of stay.

IF an extension of stay is not cancelled, you may eventually be on overstay, and you may eventually have to pay a fine of up to 20K THB the next time you do something at the immigration office. You *MAY* also be fined another 2K THB for failure to do a 90 day report.

If your school does not allow you to have time off to travel, then you don't have time off to travel. If you travel, expect to be terminated.

If you leave Thailand, and return, you WILL have to go through any mandatory quarantine, and acquire a Certificate of Entry. Quarantines and Certificate of Entries are outside the group's scope.
