TLDR : Answer Summary
The start date of the COVID extension in Thailand depends on the issuing office and officer. It's suggested to apply close to your current visa stamp's expiration date to avoid losing days. Personal experiences indicate that the extension often starts from the expiration date of the existing visa.

I can only talk about my own experience. All Covid extensions started from the current visa expiration date. (I did it 4 times in Chiang Mai)

Did you apply for the first Covid extension at Chaing Mai Immigration office?

and what about the FIRST one you got from what ever stamp you were on originally?

That's when they usually start the covid extension on the day you apply because you're "changing reasons" for your stamp from what ever you were on to one based on covid.

if you change from tourist visa (extension) to COVID extension, the 60 days start at the day you apply for the COVID extension.

Whether a 60 day covid extension starts from the date you apply or is added to your current stamp's expiration is totally up to the issuing office and officer. For the first covid extension we recommend you apply close to the date your current stamp is running out, so you don't lose too many days IF it starts the date you apply.

The problem is the last day to apply is 24 January right? And my visa is until 14 February...

at all immigration offices, you can apply when you have 30 days or less remaining (some allow for 45 days or less). However, you’ll basically be able to stay an extra 30 days AND that extension of stay does not need to be granted
