when leaving the country , upon return (within the expiry date of the original visa) do you get an "admitted until" date equivalent to the expiry date of the visa or do you get a full year from entry date. If the latter , does this mean you can effectively get almost 2 years off of your visa if you time your exits effectively.

TLDR : Answer Summary
When a holder of a NON-O-A visa leaves Thailand and returns within the visa's expiry date, they can receive a new admission stamp. This stamp allows them to stay for another year, provided they exit just before the initial year's end, effectively extending their stay potentially to almost two years. However, during the second year, a re-entry permit is needed to maintain the stay if they plan to leave the country.

Each time you depart and reenter Thailand, up until the enter before date, you will get an additional year from that most recent reenter date.

Just to be clear, doing a trip anytime prior to the enter before date of the visa gets you a second year.

Thanks I thought that was the case but friend with the visa was sure he had to extend after one year irrespective of exits

Simple answer - yes
By doing a trip just before the end of the first year you'll get another year.
Note in the 2nd year you'll need to have a re-entry permit to keep that 'permitted to remain stamp" alive (if they have any trips out of Thailand)
