How to get the most out of a year-long, multi-entry Non-Immigrant Type O-A (Long Stay) visa.

First let's wrap our heads around this fact. A VISA does not let you stay IN thailand. :O The entry stamp you get off the visa does. All a visa does is guarantee that IF you're allowed in to the country you get in for the number of days allowed by that visa.

A year-long, multi-entry Non-Immigrant Type O-A (Long Stay) visa is ONLY available from a thai consulate in the country your passport comes. It requires a medical certificate, a police background check, proof of health insurance, but you can meet the proof of funds requirement by using a bank in your country.

The visa is good for a year from the date it's issued. It is good for unlimited entries to thailand during that time. Each entry to thailand will get you stamped in for a year (actually a year minus a day because the day you arrive is counted as day one).

To maximize the time in country on this visa you need to pay attention to the expiration date on the VISA itself (not your year entry stamp). Exiting and re-entering the country just before the "enter before" or "valid until" date on the VISA will get you stamped in for another year. <- This is the "free second year" people talk about on an O-A visa.

Keep in mind that IF you're going to exit/re-enter the country during this "second year" (after the VISA expired) you will need a re-entry permit to get stamped back in until your entry stamp expires.

As Gregor correctly pointed out in a deleted comment. In order to maximize your time here on this visa you DO need to meet the terms under which the visa was issued AND seeing as it's after Oct 31st that means mandatory health insurance is required. IF you try to stamp in on an existing non-O-A visa you need your health insurance to be valid for that year stamp you're getting OR you will only be stamped in until your health insurance runs out.

Thanx Gregor for bringing it to my attention. (y)

Let's see what really happens when people stamp in on O-A visas in the near future as far as whether the immigration officers at passport control follow the rule or not.

TLDR : Answer Summary
To get the most out of a Non-Immigrant Type O-A (Long Stay) visa in Thailand, you must understand that the visa only guarantees your entry, while the entry stamp determines your stay duration. This multi-entry visa allows unlimited entries for a year from its issue date. Exiting and re-entering Thailand just before the visa expiry can grant you a new entry stamp, effectively extending your stay for another year. It's crucial to adhere to health insurance requirements and maintain compliance with the visa's terms to maximize your time in Thailand.

I recently got an O-A from Hong Kong (permanent HK ID card holders only can apply). There were three differences to the requirements in

original post. Funds had to be in a lThailand based Thai bank account. A letter of guarantee from the Thailand branch had to be provided. Also a rental contract or title deeds were required.

Strange they wouldn't accept the funds in a Hong Kong bank. :/

Does it really require funds to be in a bank in one’s country of residence? I always apply with a bank statement from a third country that is neither my passports country nor located in TH. There was never a complaint about it from the consulate. But of course it was just for a O and TR visa at the time and not O-A.

i never seen the requirement at a Thai Embassy that the money must be in a bank in country of residence. you must show a bank statement with the amount of money, which country is irrelevant.

Okay I do wanna point out one thing.

IF you have an O-A visa <- you got it because you were over 50 (retirement) so when that visa runs down and you go to get a yearly extension of stay on it you can ONLY get one based on being over 50 (retirement) :O You cannot get one based on marriage, raising kids, etc. That visa is issued for one reason only and that's because you're over 50, and I was told by an immigration officer that the ONLY extension you can get from it would be also based on being over 50 (retirement).

all very so correct from a Canadian perspective.

If I'm on an Extension of Stay (from a previous old O-A visa) and I return after the 31st of October, do I need health insurance?

I'll come back on a VEE and start the O process. I don't need health insurance. I have travel insurance and free care in Australia.

There's just no posts about whether people will or won't be required to show it on extensions of O-A visas when entering the country. The rule just started. Let's see what happens.

You will need to show it when you get your next extension

Here is an example O-A issued from the thai consulate in Canberra on the 18th of Oct 2018.

The visa is valid until the 17th Oct 2019 and it is Multiple Entry. This meant that the person holding this visa could enter/exit the country all they wanted right up until 11:59PM on Oct 17th 2019 and they would get stamped in for a new year every time.

Exiting and re-entering on the 17th of Oct 2019 would get them a NEW entry stamp of a year, taking them to Oct 15th 2020.

However if they were going to exit/re-enter the country AFTER the 17th of Oct and come back to keep that entry stamp good until 2020 'alive' they'd need to buy a re-entry permit before they stamp out.
