How long will my admission be upon re-entering Thailand in December 2019 with a single re-entry permit?

I’m a bit confused and hope someone here can make it clear to me.

I applied for my first O-A visa in the US and it was issued May 2018 with validity until May 2019 (multiple entry).

I entered Thailand on 7 Aug 2018 and was admitted until 6 Aug 2019.

I left and re-entered 8 Jan 2019 and was admitted until 7 Jan 2020.

I’m planning to go back to the US for a few months (getting a single re-entry on the way out of Thailand).

My question is this: When I return to Thailand in December 2019, how long will I be admitted until?

TLDR : Answer Summary
Upon your return to Thailand in December 2019 after using a re-entry permit, you will be admitted only until 7 January 2020, the expiration date of your previous stay. Therefore, it is advisable to apply for a new one-year, multi-entry Non-O-A visa before returning to maximize your stay.

Your best game plan would be

Don't even waste the 1000baht on a re-entry permit BUT get a new year-long, multi-entry Non-O-A visa from a thai consulate BEFORE you wing your way here in December.

Without the planning or right timing you gave away approx. 7 months !

Sounds like a plan. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

You get a year entry on the visa for the validity of it. <- meaning IF you re-entered thailand BEFORE May 2019 you'd get stamped in for a year.

However if you're going to return to thailand AFTER the expiration date of the visa AND you have a re-entry permit you would be stamped in until the date of your previous entries expiration date <- in your case 7 Jan 2020.

You will be admitted until 7 Jan 2020. Reentry permits only give you the right to reenter on the same period of stay.
