TLDR : Answer Summary
Visa runs to Mae Sai are generally considered suitable for individuals holding a Non-O visa, particularly for those on a multiple-entry visa, as it allows them to renew their stay in Thailand every 90 days. Typically, you do not need to carry the 20,000 THB when re-entering, as other users have confirmed that it is not a requirement at this border for visa runs. However, it’s important to be aware of the different immigration practices, as experiences can vary based on who is processing your paperwork.

I am not going for a visa application.. only a 90 day update.

there are no 90 day extensions of stays from the immigration office on year-long, multi-entry Non-O visas. You are confusing terminology.

If you hold a year-long, mulit-entry Non-O visa you stamp out and back into the country every 90 days to get another 90 day admitted until stamp. It is NOT an extension it is a brand new entry on that visa. YOu do that for the validity of the visa itself.

The only extensions of stays you could get at the immigration office on that visa would be a 60 day visit family extension (which requires no financial proof) or a year long extension base on marriage which requires 400K baht banked for 2 months or 40K baht a month in imcone using a letter from your consulate.

If you have the finances required for an extention, you can do so at your local immigration. You can get a 1 year extension based on supporting a thai spouse if you have the finances required
Peter ******
My o visa based on marriage expires was for one year. Now I have to get 90 day extensions of stay. Isn't that kind of the same thing as a 90 day update?
Peter ******
Now I'm wondering why I'm going all the way to Savannaket which seemed to be the advice for getting a new O visa.
Tod *********
I presume you're going to Savannakhet to get a year-long, multi-entry Non-O visa based on marriage to a thai without showing any finances.

You can't BUY a visa at the Mae Sai - Tachiliek border with burma, you can just get stamped in and out to get another entry on a valid multi-entry visa or to get a visa exempt entry
Bobby ****
If your visa is expired... the date on the visa that says something along the lines of "enter before" - then yes, you need a new visa.

Think I'd rather just fly out sometimes instead of the nightmare dragon lady lol
Tod *********
let's not confuse the immigration office at Mae Sai with the people at the border when you're stamping out of thailand and then in&out of burma to activate another entry on a multi-entry visa or to get a visa exempt entry stamp
Andrew ******
Depends who you get in maisai. If its the dragon lady she''ll make something difficult that isn't actually difficult 555 I'm also non o multiple entry based on marriage. They said my Thai address didn't exist. I said "ok Google it then! "
George ********
Sorry to show my ignorance, but why would I need to go anywhere if I have a non-O visa?
Tod *********
@George *******
you most definitely are NOT on a Non-O visa any longer. I bet you're on a yearly extension of stay that you buy at the immigration office for 1900baht every year. That is NOT a visa it is an extension of stay.

A Non-Immigrant Type O visa is sold only two ways. One as a 90 day single entry and the other as a year-long, multiple entry. On the year long multiple entry you must exit/re-enter the country every 90 days.
Bobby ****
Correct
@Lu**
- there are more reqs when getting it at immigration and some of which, some people cannot or do not have, therefore that's why some need to get it at an "easy" consulate such as savannakhet.

It not so bad because it breaks it up a little but can be an inconvenience. Where did you get your visa ?
George ********
All I've ever done is report to the local office. Good God! I wouldn't want to have to leave every 90 days! That's why I left Vietnam!

I think it depends on where you get your visa. If you get a non-O from an immigration office in Thailand, i i think you can just do a 90 day report in your local office. But i got my multiple entry Non-O visa from savannakhet so there for i have to do visa runs every 90 days. Is this correct

At the Mae Sai -Tachiliek border it costs $10USD or 500baht to get stamped in and out of burma. If you're using USD make sure it's a bill in pristine condition. ;)

@Amor****
says they prefer the THB as they make money on it. I've had to claim I only had USD and didn't have any THB on me at all, but they took my $10 eventually.

@Bobby ***
They make money on exchange rate too, so why asking USD10.-. Obvious THB500.- is better for them, but I guess it comes down to the person who run the show there and the agreement about their own revenue sharing.
Bobby ****
Yea, sometimes they take it some times they dont. They used to take it back in the day no problems, didn't even need to be pristine. But these days it is hit or miss with the officers.
Bobby ****
non-o multiple? yes, you can go to mae sai for it every 90days. no, they do not ask for the 20k. thats where i go and have gone for the past 9 years
