Do I need to show proof of onward travel when entering Thailand with a visa?

Probably wrong group... However, I give it a shoot...

I was told by a friend that I could be denied access to board the airplane upon departure, if I was not able to show bulletproof evidence that I had a booked, ready and clear plan of how and when i would leave Thailand. My friend told me that it is the responsibility of the airplane company to validate this.

So, now I talked with the airplane company and they told me that this is wrong...

However, they told me - the problem is in the airport of Bangkok, from the Thai authorities, where there would be a chance for me to be denied access into Thailand - if I can not document booked and ready travel documents...

So, what to do now?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The original poster was concerned about being denied boarding due to not having proof of onward travel when flying to Thailand. While the airline stated there were no issues, fellow users clarified that airlines can refuse boarding without an onward ticket in certain circumstances, primarily to avoid financial responsibility if the passenger is denied entry. Though typically travelers with a valid visa and travel plans may not be questioned, there is a possibility of being asked for documentation by Thai authorities upon arrival. Various suggestions included booking a low-cost flight out or obtaining a valid visa before travel to avoid issues.

I think the O/P has enough information now to decide what they're going to do. :)

Book a flight or bus ticket out

Unfortunately your airline is wrong, and
@Bi**
is correct ;)

IF you try to check in to a flight here without having bought a visa beforehand AND on a one way flight the airline can refuse you boarding because if for some reason you're denied entry to the country they airline lugs you back on their dime.

I have never heard of someone holding a valid visa (any visa) to thailand being questioned by the airline when checking in on a one way ticket because the fact you hold a visa means if you're denied entry YOU pay your own way out of the country.
@Rob***
, is also correct about the 3-proof-ofz that you can be asked to show when stamping into the country. However in reality of the thousands of people who stamp in to thailand every week few if any are asked.

If you travel with a visa then I believe the airline is not responsible for your return travel should you be refused entry. Therefore they will let you board without proof of onward travel.

@Den***
, if you already have confirmation from the airline company it is no problem than just go ahead with your plans.

By the time of departure I will have a tourist visa and a one-way flight, first time going to Thailand.... Then from Bangkok to Chiang Mai... Then Airbnb for 4 days while looking for condo or serviced apartment... but from this point, there are no official fixed plan... except leaving around 20 of october... problem is I might leave before or maybe even move on to somewhere else... ex. philippines... but if that lack of plan will bring me in trouble I have to act on it now.

I myself have been initially denied boarding from London Heathrow to BKK because i did not have a ticket out of Thailand. My return ticket was from Manila as i intended to buy my ticket bkk to Manila when i was in Thailand.. After alot of messing about and arguements i was allowed to sign a disclamer that id pay any and all the airline costs if i was denied entry at BKK. I was lucky enough to blag that. I know of a few that have been denied boarding without return tickets or proof of onward travel

Unlikely. Worse case scenario, you go online and book a throw-away one-way ticket at the airport. I have never been asked to show onward travel when going to BKK. Manila is a different story.

The visa must then be valid, when you come back, and never forget that a 3 months visa, is meant to be used in that time period after issue, but is only good for staying 2 months. You can stay in fact 2 months without visa, if you get an extension of your 30 days stay, but airlines not accept that. Then you can use "rent a ticket", to have justification, to get out of the kingdom in time.
Rab *****
Ok whatever you say.
Biff *******
Actually, it does.
Rab *****
Having a visa doesn't make any difference to the airline unless it is a visa such as a long term
Biff *******
Or buy a visa before you travel.

A solution people use is buy a very cheap flight out of thailand to Cambodia or somewhere even if not going to use it. This shows onward travel.
Rab *****
Its really up to and depends on the airline. But i do know ,if you didnt have a return or onward travel and you got refused entry at BKK that is the airlines responsibilty and they are the ones that have to pay the heavy fines and costs.

hm, so it is partly true what my friend told me... It was Norwegian - one hour ago - who told me... No issues at the gate, whatsoever...

The immigration officer who check your passport and stamp you into Thailand is allowed to ask you three proofs, funds of min 20.000 Thb or equivalent in cash, accommodation and proof of onward flight. For first time tourists there is a very small chance they ask, if you have a longer history of entries in Thailand with Visa Exempt and Tourist Visa the chance is getting bigger. The airline company is official responsible for your return flight if you have no visa, a one way ticket and you got denied entry. Some airliners take this serious, others don't see it as a big problem.
