Do I need to show bank statements for a 60 day tourist visa at Vientiane? If so, how much? I believe I read that they might ask for proof of 20K in baht at the border, not sure if this is cash or bank statement. Just want to make sure before I take the trip this weekend. Thanks everyone!

TLDR : Answer Summary
Based on the conversation, you do not need to show bank statements when applying for a 60-day tourist visa at the Thai Consulate in Vientiane, nor at the Nong Khai land border. The general consensus is that the consulate in Vientiane does not require proof of funds, and while some embassies may ask for bank statements, it varies by location. It's advised to carry cash rather than relying on bank statements at border crossings.

Okay let's sort this out right now. At the Thai Consulate in Vientiane they are not asking for proof of funds when issuing tourist visas. At the land border crossing in Nong Khai passport control is not asking for proof of funds to enter the country.

The Ventiene Thai consulate and the Nong Khai land border are the two easiest places to deal with Thai officials

When you show a bank statement, what form is that in? Are they looking for a printed statement on bank letterhead? Can you log into your account on the phone and show them the current balance? How about an ATM receipt showing the balance?
Tod *********
If they require proof of funds you need to find a printer and print out your balance showing them on a mobile phone will not work

If they want it, a printed statement. Showing on phone or ATM receipts no. In my experience the printed statement didn't need to be certified or anything, a black and white print out of the PDF statement my bank sends electronically was fine. This may depend on the consulate and visa type- that was my experience with Phnom Penh and Manila for a SETV. They may need certified for longer stay visas.

But Vientiane don't want it anyway.

Proof of finance is not required at the consulate at Vientiane

I always take more than 20k and proof of address. Why not...too easy to do...whether asked for or not....Be a Scout and always prepared....

Why not simply follow the rules and have the cash on-hand, just in case? Makes life so much simpler....
Barry *******
I have never been asked to show finances in Vientiane.

I don't think there has ever been a single report ever of anyone being asked for 20,000 at the Friendship Bridge/Nong Khai border. Taking 20,000 cash out and carrying it around with you is not without risk, I had the lot stolen before after doing this "in case I needed it" coming back.

And what's the worst that can happen? He gets denied at the border for not having 20,000, he goes back to Laos and gets it out of an ATM? Hardly the end of the world is it? I WOULD carry 20,000 flying in with "history". That's a good idea. But it's not necessary at that border.

Brian Rowell you should not even be allowed to reply to these post giving this reckless advice

They can also deny you entry for wearing silk pants or sandals that are not part of a national costume

Part of the job of Immigration Officers is to check if all is according the law. They can ask proof of money, onward travel and proof of accommodation. It is up to the officer who handles your passport to ask or not to ask. IF he ask and you have it, it is no problem, if not the problem starts.

Stop misleading. He 'Could be'. Far too many posting that think they are running Thai immigration.

not at the friendship bridge border after already getting his visa in Vientiane he won’t.
Ron *******
You could be asked to show 20,000 baht in cash or travellers cheques.

Good to know.

I had to show bank statement at consulate in Phnom Penh, for what it's worth.
Tod *********
Well it is anecdotally interesting to know what Thai consulates require proof of funds, it has nothing to do with a Thai Consulate in Vientiane

Always used an agent there for my wife and have never been asked to show anything.
