I am applying for a Multiple Entry 6 month visa from my home country. Do I need to show an onward flight 60 days after arriving, or is 90 days ok given that it is my intention to get a visa extension?

TLDR : Answer Summary
When applying for a Multiple Entry 6-month visa to Thailand, the requirement for showing an onward flight varies by country and consulate. Generally, proof of onward travel is recommended, typically within 60 days of entry. Some experiences indicate that while the consulate may request it during the application, it is less frequently checked upon arrival in Thailand. It's best to confirm the requirements with your specific consulate before applying.

This answers the question for me. At least when using the embassy in DC

I booked return tickets for 88 days later. Now I'm reading the visa papers just as Im about to mail them in and it says "period of stay not exceeding 60 days"
Rasmus ***********
Have you used this before? Looks like a brilliant idea.

@Walter ********
. Far more likely that you'll be asked at airline check in.
Jim *******
I did.

Jim James, read my comment please.

Also conceivable(not usually) that incoming immigration could ask for ongoing ticket. YMMV

90 was ok in Denmark. But there's always a chance immigration might ask to see within 60.
Tod *********
immigration won't ask when you come in on an METV it's the consulate that needs it to sell you the visa and the airline that wants to see it it when you check in.
Charlotte *******
METV (from U.K.) requires proof of onward travel within the 6 month VISA window. As I wasn't sure what I wanted to do after 6 months or where I would be, I bought the cheapest ticket out of the country, which I won't end up using. Cost about £25.

Right - thanks Charlotte - that rings a bell for me from the last time I did a ME - I think I have got myself confused because this sounds right - an onward flight within the 6 month window - not the 9 months that you could get if you do extensions. perfect - I think I am fine then as I already have a flight to Penang within the next 3 months to see a friend.

what is your home country?

Hi Tod, I am from the U.K.

I didn't have to show any onward flight at the consulste in Glasgow but this was something I was worried about so I emailed them before hand to find out. They replied the same day and were very helpful

Yes, she messaged me last night (10:30pm on a Friday night!) to say she wouldn't be there Tuesday but Monday was fine. I am so impressed and very grateful to her.
Gary **********
I would try to call. Make sure they are open as the woman who deals with the visa applications isn't always there. It's a very small office

ORIGINAL POSTER
That's really helpful to know Gary - I have been communicating with the amazing consulate at Glasgow. My plans suddenly changed (rushing back to Thailand sooner than I intended) so now my onward flight is not within 60 days, hence my question to this group instead of to Glasgow. I will go to Glasgow to get my visa on Monday.
Jim *******
Ment to be IO.
Jim *******
Yes,but many check in staff don't know the rules. Legally, any UP, can demand an onward ticket for any Aliens.

Nothing on TV tonight?

Glad my intelligence screwed you!

@Wayne *******
. With the limited mentality that you've proven you have ,God only knows just what you may be likely to do with my Birth Son.Scarey to even think about that. Now, take a well earnt hike! Before I make you!
Jim *******
Wayne, My Son and I, have, NEVER been questioned by Immigration, and if you were blessed with English language knowledge, you'd have known that fact!
Jim *******
Wayne, once again, you're truly showing what a total lack of knowledge you have!
Wayne ********
@Joe *****
I point out that your comments are redundant and I'm somehow the bad guy? Maybe you should read the original post a few times to understand what it is asking?
Jim *******
Wayne, slip away and take the badly needed rest,and during that time you may be lucky enough to mature!
Joe ******
Wayne Carter - any specific reasons to start dishing out insults? Kindergarden mentality or what?
Jim *******
@Wayne *******
,your assuming comment about my Son and I, tells me your sad calibre!
Jim *******
And yours then? She asked about onward ticket, or did that fact skip you?!
Wayne ********
Maybe because you and your son look dodgy?
Wayne ********
@Jim ******
Your comment is irrelevant to Mandy, who started this thread.
Jim *******
@Wayne *******
,I hasten to suggest you check your guesswork comment!
Jim *******
@Wayne *******
. Maybe you haven't, but both my Son and I have, even while having a Thai tourists visa. So you're personal experience is irreverent!
Wayne ********
and
@J**
!
Wayne ********
Mandy is asking about applying for a visa in the US, and when to date the flight out, so your comments are redundant,
@J**
:-)
Jim *******
@Joe *****
. Correct. So many people give incorrect advice and just say, Oh,but it never happened to them!
Jim *******
IO should have been.
Joe ******
Well, suppose it's about time they start "cracking down" on those knicker-less people :-)
Wayne ********
I've never been checked by a police officer to see if I was wearing underwear either, because it is a crime not to wear it in public in Thailand.
Joe ******
I never been ask to provide proof of a driving licence in the UK either, doesn't mean it's not required.
Wayne ********
I've never been asked for an onward flight and I've had more entries than I can count... I've never heard of anyone being asked either. I don't think it's an issue...
Joe ******
If you have problems at check-in (I had it several times)

ask to talk to the supervisor (they are always around)

and you can explain (worked every time)

The staff at the counter does not have the authority to decide, the supervisor has..
Joe ******
The requirement for proof of onward travel is required if you're on a VE, VOA or SETV. It's not a specific requirement for METV or NON- (XYZ)
Steve *******
@J**
, in the UK your driving licence is not checked randomly, it's checked everytime you are stopped by the police, so
@Da***
not such a smart anology.
David ******
Smart analogy.
Joe ******
Both are checked randomly
Joe ******
Same, same. Both are "requirements" by law.
Steve *******
@J**
. Not really sure what a driving licence has got to do with a visa.
Joe ******
As I said, my driving licence is really "required" when driving either. Not in Asia, not in Europe, not in the States and still, I have to have it ;-)
Steve *******
@Joe *****
. The same goes for the SETV or visa exemption. Rarely required when traveling
Joe ******
During application yes, usually not whilst traveling on a METV
Steve *******
It's required if you apply for an METV in the UK.
Wayne ********
Depends on what country you are from. I didn't need to prove an onward flight, but I am not American...
Terary **********
I have in the past bought $20 bus ticket out of town. Also I have bought plane tickets - with the intention of rescheduling.
Steve *******
Most Consulates/Embassys want an itinery of travel, to be sure check with wherever you're applying. I'd suggest 60 days as extentions are at the discretion of the IO and not 100% guaranteed.
Steve *******
@J**
. You dont need proof of onward travel to apply for an SETV in the UK but you do need it for an METV.
Steve *******
Joe. You need it to apply for the visa in the first place.
Joe ******
On a SETV yes, on a METV, you can bounce to the next border, so you would not need onward travel within the first 60 days of your stay.
Mandee ********
ORIGINAL POSTER
Thank you Steve - that makes sense to me - the extension is a request after you arrive so you should be able to show you intend to leave after 60 days.
Tero ************
You should ask your embassy this to be sure. Every embassy has different ways how they decide what is exatly needed.
Joe ******
@Mandy **********
- and whilst you at it, buy yourself 500 US$ worth of Traveller cheques and you will not need to worry about proof of sufficient funds either. You do not have to use them and once you got back home safely, you can change them back.
Mandee ********

Thanks Tero, yes, good point. I am trying to finish all my planning but I can just wait until Monday to get that question answered.
