TLDR : Answer Summary
The consensus among commenters is that purchasing a return ticket is generally not necessary if you are planning to retire in Thailand, especially if you have a long-stay visa like the OA visa. However, some suggest it may be wise to have a return ticket in case of emergencies or changing travel plans. Visa regulations vary by embassy, and travelers should check specific airline policies as well. Overall, weighing potential costs and risks is advised.

compared to a one way ticket, a return ticket only costs a little more and might be worth it if it saves you problems at the airport or you need to return early for whatever reason. The airlines are pretty large when it comes to changing flights at the moment

That was 2 weeks ago when I posted it I had checked the prices that evening but it might have changed by now (I booked my return flight date 6-12 months later so that might result in cheaper flights as well)

It depends on the embassy that issues the visa.
Some require onward tickets and some don't.

Cover all possibilities and could be cheaper and then use return ticket later to somewhere new.

I vote no. The last time I looked (years ago) Airlines required Visa OR return ticket. Immigration's requirements vary depending on your visa. If you're coming on a long term visa that you satisfy Airline's requirement. If you have acquired a visa, then you have satisfied immigration requirement.

No it's far simpler to buy a ticket when you need it with all the rules changing and airlines cancelling flights etc etc

No need with long stay visas like OA.

I think it depends on what visa you plan on entering on, since you said "plan on" it seems you may not already have a visa based on marriage or retirement?
