TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, it is generally acceptable to book a one-way flight to Thailand if you possess a valid retirement visa. However, experiences may vary by airline, with some carriers requiring proof of onward travel regardless of visa status. It is advisable to check with the airline prior to departure as policies differ between carriers.

I'll add that even as a frequent flyer with Oman Air, even when I have a valid visa they always check I have a return flight. Obviously all carriers are different, just my experience them them in particular.

I have always been so fascinated by the discussion about onward ticket. Because I don't remember ANY ONE has asked me to show my itinerary or return ticket over the past 15 years of my over 100 trips to many countries (including many many trips to Thailand) I am not saying the discussion or concern is not valid. I am just curious, has anyone been asked or denied of boarding due to this reason?

I too use Oman air but have no problem with valid visas.

yep, it's totally carrier specific. Some want proof of onward travel no matter what type of visa you have, some will let you sign a waiver stating you're flying without proof of onward travel and if you're denied entry you pay your own way back, and some won't ask for it as long as you have a visa/extension for thailand in your passport.

It's a total crap shoot :O and that's why I said call the carrier and check with them ;)

as a general rule people with a valid visa to thailand (no matter the type) are usually not asked for proof of onward travel by their air carrier. HOWEVER with that being said it is carrier specific and they COULD ask you for proof of onward travel. I'd call the air carrier, tell them you have a long-stay visa for thailand and ask if it's okay to board the plan without proof of onward travel

Or book a cheap refundable flight out of Thailand, then cancel it once you’re checked in in London.

Why, he does not need onward travel.

yes ok, only issue will be with airline staff maybe but just show your retirement visa/extension.
