Hi everyone, landing next week and completely lost. I have a 1st-year Non-Immigrant O (Retirement) visa (Multiple Entry) and a Thai bank account.

I’ve received conflicting comments saying there is no connection between having the visa/bank account and the entry rules, and that I still must prove it anyway. I need to know for sure.

Do I really need to show 20,000 THB in physical cash at airport immigration? Has any retiree actually been asked for cash recently?

Thanks
Answer summary
The requirement to show 20,000 THB in cash upon entry to Thailand is generally associated with tourist visas and visa exemptions. Holders of a Non-Immigrant O visa (Retirement) typically do not need to demonstrate sufficient funds at the airport. However, immigration officers may ask for proof of funds from any traveler. It is strongly advised to carry some cash, not just for security but to comply with regulations if questioned. Most retirees with valid long-term visas do not report being asked for this proof upon entry.

Okay let's put this to bed right now

I have never ever heard of anyone on a year extension w/re-entry permit based on retirement being asked for proof of funds when you enter thailand, not even a single time.

People on free stamp (visa exempt) and/or tourist visas CAN be asked but even those people are rarely asked..

Make sure you fill out a TDAC (Thailand Digital Arrival Card) and you'll be fine.

If you have an active visa, and re-entry permit you should be fine.

It doesn't have to be in Thai baht ,just equivalent in any currency n they may or not ask to see it so prudent to have it in my opinion

I agree. $700 for a five day trip is ridiculous but if you’re planning on being there a year, you might as well bring it.

From TAT:

"Hello,

You’re correct that the 20,000 THB requirement is generally associated with Tourist Visa and Visa Exemption entries. However, Thai immigration officers retain the authority to request proof of sufficient funds from any traveller at the port of entry, including holders of Non-Immigrant visas.

While O-A visa holders meet separate financial requirements during the visa application process, carrying proof of available funds when travelling is still recommended."

Chances are you have an extension of stay based on retirement. No you do not need to have 20k in your hand upon entry.

The most recent version of the Thailand Interior Ministry Notice/Announcement about Physical Cash in Hand Requirements for travelers making Entry into Thailand, dated 8 May 2000 and published in Thailand's Royal Gazette on 9 June 2000, is nothing new with THB ฿20,000.- Thai Baht per person physical cash in hand

The physical Banknotes do NOT need to be in Thai Baht, but any major international currency that is easily convertible to Thai Baht or otherwise

At current foreign exchange rates, ฿20,000.- Thai Baht is over USD $600 Dollars nowadays

A single EUR 500 € Euro banknote ( 2 Euro banknotes = 550 € Euros ) or a single CHF 1000 Swiss Francs banknote is definitely sufficient

Clearly, the Thai Interior Ministry Notices/Announcements do have Cash in Hand Requirements for Non–O, Non–B, and other types of Non–Immigrant Visas and it is also written in English « Non–Immigrant Visa »

Why do so many continue to say it does not apply to Non–O Visa's, when, in Thai Immigration Field Manuals, Thai Immigration Training Manuals and several Thai Immigration Offices and Divisions have this Interior Ministry Notice about Cash in Hand Requirements on their websites

No such visas are being issued. First learn the basics of what visa you have. Stop showing your ignorance

He clearly has a 1 year extension of stay and multi re-entry permit. Are you confused?

Make sure to Double Check and Verify Again after each Re–Entry that your Latest Entry Stamp is Correct:

1.) Has the same stay Validity End Date as your current Re–Entry Permit

2.) Entry Stamp Type is: « Non–RE »

Firstly I would question the type of visa you say you have ?

Do you mean you have a 90 day Non O visa based on retirement, or you have already been to Thailand have a 12 months extension and a multiple re-entry permit ?

Nothing like that. Is only for the tourist

No as that requirement is only for visa exempt entries.
