TLDR : Answer Summary
If you hold a retirement visa in Thailand, you are not required to make any payments every 90 days. However, you must report your address to Thai immigration every 90 days, which is free of charge. The payment is only necessary once a year when extending your visa.

Thanks for the info. I’m 50+ and can put 800k Baht in a Thai bank.

I'm guessing I have to enter the Kingdom on a visa, open a bank account and deposit the money and after it's been in the bank for two months I can apply for a retirement visa from inside Thailand? If this is the case, which visa would you suggest I get from the UK in order to enter Thailand initially?

MOST immigration offices allow you to get an in-country Non-O visa.

I suggest getting a visa that lets you stay as long as possible. I recommend a single entry tourist visa. This visa lets you stay in Thailand for 60 days, and then apply for a 30 day extension of stay based on tourism. This should give you enough time to open a bank account and season the money.

Yes you can. However, remember to get the FIRST one year extension of stay based on being over 50, the money must be seasoned for TWO months, and to get the NEXT one year extension of stay, the 800K THB must be seasoned for THREE months AFTER your last extension, and TWO MONTHS prior to your new extension, AND the money can not go below 400K THB.

Once a year when you extend your visa. The 90 day rerports just confirm your address.

First look at your home country for its requirements for the retirement visa...

Are you married to a Thai?

Are you father of a Thai child?

Are you age 50+ ?

If so do you meet the financial requirements for the visa you are applying for?

If you have a retirement based extension of stay in Thailand you do not have to pay each 90 days but do need to report your address to Thai immigration each 90 days... That is FREE.

I think you may be confused about what the retirement visa process is for Thailand.

If so please tell us what basis are you seeking retirement in Thailand?
