Hi, I'm moving from Bangkok to Chiang Mai on Dec.29. Is it really true that I must notify Immigration within 24 hours?!? That seems extreme.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, it is true that you must notify Immigration within 24 hours of moving. This requirement is part of the Immigration law established in 1975. Other individuals have confirmed that failing to do so can lead to fines. However, it is now easier to report a change of address since landlords can do it online in a matter of minutes. If you move on a weekend, you can report to Immigration the following business day.

What about TM30 when you don’t move, but go to a different city in Thailand for a 3 or 4 weeks holiday trip ?

I close this down. To many people with different stories, please answer a question. How you did your registration in different scenario's does not help and only makes this list of if you did what I did if not than it is different to confusing to read.

No need to do it in cm if you already done it before.

Some hotels may do it anyway if they know the procedure.

If is on the weekend , then report the next business day ( unless the office is open ) . So if you move on say on a Friday , you report on the Monday ,assuming the office is not open on the weekend

Yes. I moved a few days ago and went to immigration with all the relevant papers the following day. 2 guys in front of me were both fined for not going to notify their change of address on time, both were a couple of weeks over, the lady stressed they should have come within 24 hours.

Yes, it is part of the Immigration law written in 1975.

But today the landowner, house owner, landlord, house master or the possessor can do it on-line, a less then 5 minute job.

Hotels will just ask a copy of your passport and do it for you.

here's one, recently returned from Australia, went to Samut Sakhon Immigration to lodge a new TM30 and was told it was not necessary because I haven't changed address.

@Alan *****
correct, if you come back from abroad to same address, TM 30 not needed

INCORRECT. It depends on the Immigration Office if and when you have to register again at the same address.
