Do I need to enroll in a new course to re-enter Thailand on a DTV visa?

I finished my 6 month cooking course about 3 months ago under my DTV visa and have since left Thailand. I’m now planning to re-enter Thailand.

Do I need to enroll in a new course before returning? Could there be any issues with re-entering if I’m no longer enrolled in a course?

Alternatively, is it sufficient to attend a random cooking class once a month and ask the school to provide an attendance confirmation, or do I need to be formally enrolled in an ongoing course?
Answer summary
The original poster, who completed a 6-month cooking course under a DTV visa, inquires if they need to enroll in a new course before re-entering Thailand. Comments from the community suggest that there is generally no strict requirement to prove enrollment in an ongoing course upon re-entry, as long as the visa is valid. However, it may depend on the discretion of the immigration officer and the specifics of the visa type. Some members recommend planning ahead and having supporting documents ready to avoid potential issues. Others suggest that a short course or attending a cooking class may help demonstrate legitimate intent.

Exit flight perhaps worse case, they can’t cancel the visa.

Just a thought - putting aside the 'rules'

If you have the time, money and interest, why not enrol in Traditional Thai medicine / Muay Thai - or frankly any course that floats your boat.

Improve your own skills and knowledge while living in your favourite country - I mean, why would you not?

Bring your pots and pans for a cooking demonstration just in case.

Since you're already on a DTV, now is a good time to plan your next steps rather than waiting until your next entry. Whether you need to stay enrolled or provide additional evidence can depend on the category you applied under and what immigration may ask when you return. Having a clear plan and supporting documents ready before you travel can make the re-entry process much less stressful.

Currently, there are no obligations to prove you attended the course or to book a new one. You have a 5-year multi-entry tourist visa

IO’s have discretion….

A question for you is - if you were an IO and reviewed someone visiting your country for 5 years and you had booked a 6 month course - would you ask any questions? Would you suspect that even if it was within the rules - would you suspect the rules were being abused.

Remember this is not the part of the world where the laws are twisted every which way to get people out of sticky situations.

Another question is - do you feel that you are within the spirit of the visa?

I was never told to bring all my dtv documentation with me when i passed thru an immigration check point - but if an IO asks - i have it to hand and 2 years in now (almost) i can demonstrate my dtv justification is still a valid and current. Doesnt take much….

For you, book an another short course that starts in a few months…. Yeah its probably overkill, but if its something you want to do, may have done anyway, why not get it in the bank…. 2 years down the road, io’s may well be far more critical than they are today - abuses of the spirit of dtv is obvious - so build a bank of evidence.

Or dont. You’ll probably be fine for your next entry - and the one after that - but in year 3.5 of your 5 years, and youve spent 3.25 years in the kingdom, and an IO asks - tell me about your course - and you have done nothing for 3 years - dont expect an easy rubber stamp.

You have the visa. That’s all that matters.

Since your original plan was only a 6-month course, your current visa has served its purpose.

Depending on the specific category you used to apply for the DTV, immigration officers might ask you to show proof of your activities upon arrival.

Worst-case scenario, they may admit you under a Visa Exemption or Visa on Arrival (VoA), depending on your nationality.

I would suggest if you're unsure, it’d best to email your nearest Thai embassy or consulate so you have a written copy of their response. Alternatively, just ensure you enter Thailand on the correct visa meant for your actual purpose 🤷‍♂️

Recently there have been a few posts on here about immigration cracking down on people, for not really using the DTV for what it was originally set up for.

I don’t think it’s possible to have multiple visas simultaneously. I mean if he has a DTV, I don’t think he’s able to get a tourist visa or Visa on Arrival, or any other visa for what it matters.

Yes your correct, if they deem your entry into Thailand out of category and you can’t provide them with the information they request or require they’ll cancel the DTV.

If the DTV visa is cancelled, you can still enter Thailand on a visa exemption (or a Visa on Arrival if your nationality qualifies). And they’ll stamp your passport and allow entry accordingly.

However, immigration officers will closely scrutinize your travel history and plans to ensure you are not abusing the system.

What does your e-visa file say? Does it say cooking classes or not? What's the note? If it doesn't say, then don't buy it.

And if the IO asks about what you are here for? Workation or Soft Power? What is the perfect answer when you've got nothing to show? 😁 Written or not written doesn't change anything.

It makes a big difference. If it doesn't say "soft power," then you're telling him you're here as a remote worker. It doesn't matter how you actually submitted your documents.

So you need to have proof of this work. I'm not talking about making it up. What I'm saying is that if you applied through Soft Power, you don't have to sit through those courses for the entire five years, period! You can work remotely for the remaining four and a half years.

And if the IO asks you to show the documents related to that work? You'll be caught lying. That's their job.

No need just re-enter. When I re-enter the officers only asked me to show the hotel booking or apartment contract.

There is no correct answer so all it comes down to is the IO.
