Do I need to cancel my Non-Immigrant ED visa from January 2023 before applying for a new one?

I had an non immigrant ED visa in January 2023, which mentions the day the stamp was added and two smaller rectangular stamps, one underneath, and one on the next page mentioning the day I received it and the expiration date (3 months later). There is also a red stamp saying USED above the visa.

I left Thailand 3 weeks after receiving it and returned 8 more times since on visa exemptions. Now I want to apply for another ED visa, but I was told that I have to first cancel the ED visa that I received almost 3 years ago. Is this correct?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The individual is inquiring whether they must cancel a previous Non-Immigrant ED visa (Education Visa) before applying for a new one. They received the initial visa in January 2023, used it for three months, and have since visited Thailand multiple times on visa exemptions. Community responses indicate that it is not necessary to cancel the original visa as visas cannot be canceled; they simply expire. The confusion may arise from misunderstanding the difference between a visa and an extension of stay.

That is the strangest thing I've ever heard.

There is no way to cancel the initial Non-ED visa or the 90 day stamp once it's issued,

You get 90 days, you leave during that time and the stamp cancels when you stamp out

There is nothing to cancel

Only extensions of stays can be cancelled,

Sadly it sounds like the school you're dealing with doesn't know the difference between a Non-ED 90 day visa and an extension of stay..

You can't cancel a visa. If you had an extension of stay you must cancel it. Check your passport for "extension of stay permitted" or words to that effect

other than the visa itself, the other stamps are written in Thai, but translating them shows nothing of importance, other than the school name and some stuff related to the officer that approved the visa and on what date, but absolutely nothing related to an “extension of stay”

@Jordan ****
then you have nothing to cancel

Under the 3 big stamps related to the visa, there is a final blue rectangular stamp saying “Please contact the immigration office for a re-entry before leaving Thailand”

If you didn't extend that initial 3 month visa, you are fine.

Thanks. I was told the same by other people with experience in these matters, but the school insisted I get the stamp cancelled

you cannot cancel a visa only the extension, your visa was "used" when you entered and your permission to stay stamp was terminated when you exited
