Converting DTV (soft power Muay Thai) to Non-O based on marriage

Hello everyone, is it possible to convert my DTV into a Non-O?

I recently got married to my thai wife and I would be happy to get a Non-O and then 1 year marriage extension.

I got my DTV in Rome Embassy Italy. For context, this embassy never replies to emails, so I can’t even ask for a cancellation of my current DTV…

Is it possible to convert it in some way? I can’t open a bank account inside Thailand so it’s usually advised to apply for Non-O outside Thailand. But i don’t know how it works in case of conversion of a visa. Thank you very much
Answer summary
The post inquires about the possibility of converting a DTV (Thai visa obtained through a different category) to a Non-O visa after marriage to a Thai national. Key comments indicate that without a Thai bank account, it's generally not feasible to convert the visa while in Thailand. Information also suggests that it's possible to maintain the DTV until it expires rather than trying to convert. Some users share experiences with Thai immigration and stress the importance of bank account requirements for obtaining residency status through a Non-O visa.

Incredible... you are giving up a 5 year multiple entry DTV visa and inviting yourself into the jungle of paperwork annually for the One year extension as Married to Thai. Including the money in the Thai bank account requirements, visitation by Thai Immigration Officers each year to confirm you are still married to Thai, living together, interviews with your neighbors, photos of your bedroom and home... drawing map to get to your home address... And whatever else they decide to add...

Good Luck 🍀

- I was just asking about it, in case I need another option. However, non-b based on marriage can lead to permanent residency status over time, which a DTV doesn’t

DTV_BegPecker great response the DTV restricts longer term plans. While it might be harder certainly worthwhile if that’s the longer plan. 🙏🏼👍🏼

DTV_BegPecker IF you have a Job in Thailand and pay Thai Income taxes... Yes there is a way to get permanent residency status.

Look at the requirements for it.

Without having a bank account in Thailand you won't be able to convert the DTV to a Non-O visa inside Thailand. Without cancelling your DTV via the consulate that issued it you won't be able to apply for a Non-O visa outside of Thailand. Easiest to just stick with your DTV until it expires

I’m on a dtv and will transition to a marriage visa soon. The embassy over in Singapore told me i dont need to cancel the dtv, just enter thailand using my 3 month non o visa when i enter mate.

your problem will be that a Thai consulate should not issue a visa to you while you are already in possession of a current visa

exactly this. I did my 90 day notice yesterday (rural immigration office) and we asked about process of transitioning to Non-O under marriage. The immigration officer gave us a full list of requirements (in Thai) but emphasized that I would need to open a Thai bank account and place 400k into the account for 2 months. The IO was adamant that I could open a bank account with a DTV, but I didn’t want to argue or embarrass her, so we just accepted what she said and left. The other option she said that if me and my spouse had a joint account, we would need 2x the amount, but not sure if that fixes the issue, if one can place their name on a spouse’s account.
