Do I need a Thai ID number to get a SIM card as a DTV visa holder in Thailand?

Hi everyone. I'm coming in Thaïland in 2 days, I got my DTV visa approved. I wanna take a mobile plan (SIM card only) but they ask for a Thai ID number on true.th website.

Since I'm gonna stay for a long time, I'm not sure that's changing my number every month with a tourist SIM card is a good solution.

Do you know if they will also ask for Thai ID number if I go on a true shop directly?

Thanks

TLDR : Answer Summary
A person moving to Thailand wants to know if a Thai ID number is necessary for purchasing a SIM card. Responses indicate that with a passport, a foreigner can obtain a SIM card from True Mobile or a 7-Eleven without needing a Thai ID. Several options are available including long-term plans and eSIMs. Users recommend buying from convenience stores or at the airport for simplicity, but caution about potential higher prices at airport kiosks. Overall, it's feasible for a newcomer with a DTV visa to secure a mobile plan without needing a Thai ID.

All 3 cellular carriers have booths at BKK. There is no price difference between company stores and independent resellers (7-11) as all the available plans are published.

Go to any booth after you clear immigration and hand the attendant your phone. They will have you choose a plan from the chart. Show your passport. They will load and test your phone to ensure it works.

This is not difficult.

Most will use an eSIM.

Some will add the Thai SIM to their existing as a second SIM and toggle back and forth using the phone’s settings screen.

I would never trust a 7-Eleven clerk to load a Sim into my phone however, the people that work in the airport can do it blindfolded, all day long every day.

you can get 1 year sims from resellers for way cheaper than you can get in the stores, including the mobile shops. Even plans not available in the shops. I have been doing it for years.

I would suggest getting a sim from a proper store outside the airport because well you get airport prices, but if you don't mind paying price it's the way to go! You can just download the providers app and recharge your data whenever you want. It's pretty simple.

AIS, DTAC and True prices are the same at the airport, in the malls or at the standalone stores.

if you say so, but I disagree from my own personal experence. My wife and I both have Dtac, she paid double at BKK then I did 2 days later at a Dtac store.

@Tim ******
Did you go to the DTAC booth at BKK or some random shop?

Did you buy a sim, an esim or just service?

How long ago was this?

I looked into it: it's like Holyfly, but it's kinda expensive compare to tourist SIM card and it's not even unlimited data

same here, my first time in Thailand I took something like that, I paid 70€ before getting there. My friend took the unlimited sim at a
****
for like 800 bath. And it worked better than mine 🤣 but since I going for a long time, I'm gonna take a plan so I don't change sim every month, I'm leaving today 😱 cheers bro

I recommend to get a sim from 7-11 and you dont need to change the number often like that .. they wont ask the id card from foreigners

they do ask for your passport and take a photo. I just got mine at 7-11. 7 days data SIM. Then you download the app and buy a plan. Didn't change my number still have access to what'sapp, other apps, banking etc.

You go to the true shop with your passport. And you get your sim you can’t buy it online as you need to verify yourself for a SIM card that only works with Thai id

You can also get a card from Finn mobile they are cheap and have good service have them for years as my 2 sim

Get a sim from a 7-11 or phone shop and pay between 200 and 350 Baht for your 30 day plan of choice (data, calls & texts) then renew every 30 days. You keep the sim not change it every 30 days.
