TLDR : Answer Summary
When entering Thailand on a tourist visa, it is officially required to have proof of onward travel. However, experiences vary significantly; many travelers report that immigration seldom asks for it, while airlines may enforce this requirement more strictly before boarding. Some users suggest it's safer to purchase a cheap onward ticket, as travelers have faced denial of entry without one in certain instances. Ultimately, the necessity of a return flight can depend on the airline's policy, rather than immigration policies. Officially, and particularly from certain countries, proof of onward travel is a standard requirement.

If you already have visa no one will ask you anything with one way ticket

Philippine Airlines is the only carriers that required. But they where being overly stupid since I was returning on a multi entry one year extension. Had to argue with the supervisor regarding the fact that I live in Thailand
Non-O Visa does not have an insurance requirement at RTW London, for a Non-OA there are usually recommendations for acceptable insurers on the Embassy website

One time I have been asked for it and the officer was blaming me for not having one. It was in BKK airport.

Never been asked here in pattaya now just done a border run..
ir is a requirement to show your onward fligh5 for the tourist visa when you applied online. However if you are entering Thailand without a visa for 60-days you may need to show your airline to board your flight as they might bar you.
depends on country on origin. From uk I’ve never been asked for onward flight when applying for visa. Unless it’s changed in the last month.

I did a five day trip from Thailand to Vietnam to do as we say the visa run. However when I flew back in on once again a one way ticket. this time I was held by imigration. I have a girlfriend who lives here. It was them speaking to her that they allowed me in. If it wasn't for her being at the airport to confirm they were going to send me back to Vietnam
yes mate not a nice feeling being held by imigration. I travel a lot. First time that's happened. I tend to just fly into a country then decide next place. But after meeting my new lady decided to see if there's a shot with her. Fingers crossed.

It very clearly states on the Embassies website.
If you enter Thailand on a visa exempt, you need an onward ticket, sufficient funds equivalent to 20'000THB and hotel reservation.
well you understand if you read something in a facebook posting that overrides any official information located on silly official websites such as a country’s embassy website. It is much better to seek information in social media sites like fb.
it's not as half the idiots on fb don't know and just make shit up, plus the new dtac system asks for onward flight and if you leave it blank first thing immigration will ask is why you not have and probably deny you entry. this is to stop all these tourists trying to live here without getting correct visa so it's a good thing in my eyes
Officially yes ... many people not get asked ... but if you do n you don't have ...
Then you have problems

Ask your airline! They may want to see a ticket out of Thailand. A cheap bus or train ticket will do.

If they ask you and you have no return flight, they will send you home. Better buy a cheap flight to Singapore or Malaysia to be on the safe side. Probably busticket also works but I am not sure about that.

Do you mean a tourist visa that you apply for or a visa exemption that you get when you arrive at the airport .
Sadly that’s sort of similar to saying you’ve hired a motorcycle 20 times and never had a crash.

it actually is shows that last 3 years , after 20 flights, they never asked return ticket .. so in my opinion and experience.. its a quite small chance.. that they will ask it from him ..
but the chance is there as it is a written requirement

Usually not but that will be up to your airline policy.
A tourist visa allows you 60 days on entry. It’s possible to extend that once by 30 days (for most countries) but your airline may not take that in to account as extensions are not “guaranteed”.
The OP said they had a tourist visa. Of course they could be mistaken but either way that could be denied boarding if they don’t have an onward ticket.
No matter what people say, and no matter what websites like this one say, this is an illegal action and people should avoid it. Creating reservations without purchasing a real ticket may be seen as an attempt to bypass immigration rules. Having a real reservation doesn't change the fact that the traveller intentionally wants to exploit the system. This isn't actually difficult to check. It's much better to just buy a cheap bus ticket or something similar.
