TLDR : Answer Summary
It is essential to show proof of a departure ticket when applying for a tourist visa for Thailand, particularly if using the e-visa system or if applying at an embassy. While a return flight is not mandatory, a ticket to exit Thailand within the allotted days (60 or 90 depending on the visa type) is needed. For those entering under a 30-day visa-exempt entry, airlines may require an outbound flight ticket, so checking with the airline beforehand is advisable.

If you use the e-visa application system you need to show a ticket leaving Thailand within the 60 (90) days you can get with this visa.

It does not have to be a return ticket, back home country.

I buy a low cost flexible local ticket, usually Phuket to Singapore for example. If we decide to stay longer we just change the ticket. If we don't and go out within 30 days we get a refund or use the ticket. You need to show an out ticket to the airline that brings you in.

Thai Visa application forms, in Australia, ask for proof of flight. So you have to show a ticket to get a visa, any visa.

If you apply online, you have to upload a scan of your ticket/E-ticket.

I got a tourist visa in Sydney last year and didn't have to show booked flights, just had to list the dates I intended to travel. The application doesn't ask for proof. It just asks you what dates you are travelling on

I had to show my departure ticket when I applied for my tourist visa.

the air carrier may still insist. Check with them.

If entering on a tourist visa that you applied for online or at an embassy, then no. If entering on a 30 day visa exempt entry, then your air carrier may ask to see a flight out withing those 30 days.
