Do both partners need to appear for marriage registration in Thailand, and does it matter where we register?

Hi, with regard to marriage registration.....I have the affidavit and certified copy of my passport from the Canadian embassy and I know we need to go to a department of consular affairs to register the marriage. Questions:

1. Do we both need to go together or can just one of us go?

2. Does it matter which office we go to? Normally we are in Bangkok, but we will be in Chumphon next week (where we will get married). My wife's ID card shows Chumphon but she lives in Bangkok

I'm returning to Canada on the 22nd and I could book an appointment for the 21st in the Bangkok office, but it wouldn't be convenient for my wife to attend (hence question 1)

TLDR : Answer Summary
To register a marriage in Thailand, both partners typically need to be present for the initial interview at the Amphur office, where documentation will be reviewed. However, specific circumstances or appointments may allow for one partner to go alone. It is essential to check with the relevant offices for their policies. The location of the office can also matter, as it may depend on where your spouse's ID is registered, or where you plan to have the ceremony. It is advisable to confirm details with the local authorities or consulate before proceeding.

Just been through this process.

1. Take CNI (proof you are single) and passport, if married before, original copy of Divorce Papers to your Embassy (my case Australian). They will review and approve, collect the next day.

2. Take paperwork to be translated to Thai, this can take a week.

3. Go to Amphur, make an appointment. The 1st appointment is an interview with you both, proof of marriage/relationship, review documents etc. Another appointment is then made to attend and register.

4. Attend Amphur with wife, 2 x Thai witnesses and possibly a translator. We had all documents, photos of ceremony etc. This took 4hrs to get all paperwork done and get Marriage Certificates and Marriage Registration papers.

Amphurs are booked out months in advance for marriage registrations etc, please don't expect to make an appointment and everything will be done on the spot.

We saw many people turned away whilst we were there, no proper paperwork, no witnesses, no translator, just thought they could rock up to the Amphur and get married in Thailand...
