I'm getting married to my thai fiance in the US and we want to register our marriage in Thailand before we return in December. Is it possible to do this? Is there a lawyer that can help?

I plan to apply for a marriage visa when we return to Thailand in December. We plan to buy a house together.

Thanks for any help.

If your marriage is solemnised outside of Thailand.. you will need to get your marriage certificate authenticated in the country where it is issued before travelling.. which in your case appears to be the USA.. or you can get it done at the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok if you are already in Thailand.. however you will also need a translated version (into Thai) of your marriage certificate which also requires authentication by the Thai Embassy (if done overseas) or the the BOI (if done in country).. who will want to see copies of the original certificate, as well as the foreigners passport and Thai spouse's NIC.. and when you have everything duly stamped and certified you can finally register the marriage at your local Amphur here in Thailand.. we were oblivious to this until commencing a non-o married visa application in Thailand and immediately hit a road block.. we used an agent to expedite everything and they got the relevant documents translated and certified etc.. costing around 5k baht and taking around 3-4 weeks.. only then could we register the marriage and begin to accumulate all the other 'stuff' we needed to progress with the married visa.. and make sure you get at least 3-4 copies of both the English / Thai versions of your MC with the official stamps on them (meaning not just photocopies) because you will find some govt authorities in Thailand (such as your Amphur / Municipality) will want to keep an original.. which could otherwise deprive you of your only original copy of said documents.. and although it's wise to have photocopies as backup and for filing when needed.. they are often rejected without sight of the original alongside it.. as we found out for ourselves!

We will have a prenuptial agreement that she has agreed to sign. Also she already has 2 houses and a good job with a pension and worked for the same company for over 20 years.

there are agencies in thailand that will check out your gf online to see if she is entertaining, sleeping with, taking money from other men, etc. it's worth the investment before investing everything into marriage where you carry all the risks and she stands everything to gain.. many thai women playing many foreign men same time... but different.. check your girl before you go through with it..

I’m telling you the truth everybody that’s saying get married doesn’t give a F about you if you’re so madly in love take half of everything you have and I mean Everything and give it to her before you get married and see what happens if she stays fantastic if she takes everything and leaves fantastic because it’s only half if you have to divorce her it’s going to cost you a lot more

Robert, what value do you perceive this has?

You could possibly be better off with a different visa depending on your needs and income.

I am a U.S. citizen and married my Thai wife 35 years ago in the US.

We did take our USA marriage certificate to Thailand and did what you propose. We did it in 2023. We did it in our own without paying anyone for help. Very frustrating and difficult. We can offer the correct advice if you want it.

The most difficult part was our own USA embassy in Bangkok. Extremely uncooperative. The worst part is that my Thai wife became dual citizen 20 years ago, so it is her country too.

We completed marriage visa.

We now live in our modern style house in Ratchaburi half the year and the US half the year.

@Steve ******
No I did not for the first part of the K-1 but I used a agent for the US Embassy part to arrange for background check, medical examination and helped with interview questions for her. They also arranged for the interview appointment.

You might want to get your marriage certificate authenticated before leaving the states
Steve *******
Get the Non Imm O visa (based on marriage) in the US. It'll make the process so much easier.

Don't we have to have our marriage registered in Thailand first?

Only for your 12 month Extension

@Robert ********
Nope, not if you apply in the US.
Chris *****
Def use an agent. Otherwise you’ll take your already legalised docs to an amphur, then be told to wait 40ish days to verify that your officially legalised docs are officially legal. 🤪

@Chris ****
Can you recommend a good agent for this. I'd like to get the marriage recognized before we return to Thailand.
Chris *****
@Robert ********
I believe her name is Tuk. 097-269-8800. Have your fiance call.

She approached us at the ministry and at that stage we only needed an amphur appointment and to have it all done on the same day. She can likely do full service with affidavits etc too.

you’re welcome! You’re welcome to pm me if you have any more questions.

you may want to check and see if you will need a letter from the department of state to authenticate your marriage certificate since your planning to get married in the US. Personal experience and my wife is also Thai.
Chuck *******
also, if your required to get this letter you will also need to have is stamped at the Thai embassy in the US. Turn around time was about 9 weeks for everything. Hope this helps you save a headache 🙂

Any amphur (amphoe) district office is all you need to visit and it's easy to arrange paperwork. Your Thai fiance should be able to get all the information.
