TLDR : Answer Summary
There seems to be confusion regarding the length of stay for US citizens in Thailand. US citizens can enter Thailand under the visa exemption rule, allowing a stay of 30 days. Some commenters noted that if they enter by land, the previous rules for 15-day stays have been updated, and currently, they can obtain a 30-day visa on arrival. Miscommunication regarding the need to leave and re-enter after two weeks appears unfounded.

If they are already in the area, and just crossing at a land border, the old format before covid was visa exempt stamp for 15 days. I haven't heard of it being re-established yet.

that 15 days by land border rule for exempt entry was stopped in 2016, and was replaced by getting 30 days but limited to 2 entries per calendar year.

14 days is for visa on arrivals, those who aren't eligible for visa exempt entry such as Chinese or Indian passport holders. 14 day visa on arrivals are not extendable and not able to be changed to another visa in country.

They can enter for 30 days without a visa then, and extend an additional 30 days in country.
