My American colleague at work has her yearly non-B visa extension about to expire.
If she must leave Thailand before getting a new extension, can she get her current visa extended abroad, or will she be forced to first apply for a tourist visa, to go through the non-B/WP process all over again?

TLDR : Answer Summary
An American expat's colleague is facing the expiration of her yearly non-B visa extension. If she leaves Thailand before receiving a new extension, she cannot extend her current visa from abroad. She will need to cancel her existing extension and possibly her work permit before departing to avoid fines. Upon return, she can enter Thailand on a tourist visa but would then have to go through the non-B and work permit application process again with a new employer if her work permit is not renewed.
Extensions are only available at immigration offices inside Thailand. She would need to cancel her current extension before leaving to avoid an overstay fine (even though she may come straight back on a tourist visa). She might also need to cancel her work permit in order to do so. Why can she not get an extension as normal?
