TLDR : Answer Summary
Once you have received approval for a Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) and do not plan on extending your stay in Thailand beyond the initial 6 months, you are not required to keep the funds in your bank account. Users confirmed that if there are no plans for an extension, the funds can be spent or withdrawn after the approval. However, there is some speculation about potential future requirements for extensions, but currently, the funds do not need to remain in the bank for the duration of the initial visa.

I'd speculate the process for an extension would be similar to existing visas.

I feel like folks are being too loose with their terminology.

A visa extension happens when the term of your visa expires, and you renew it. A marriage visa is one year, so if you extend it for another year, then yes, you have to show all of the necessary documentation, financial requirements, etc. to renew it for another year.

These are not things that immigration officers deal with at border crossings.

The DTV is a 5 year, multiple entry visa. Leaving the country after 180 days, and then returning, is not a visa extension. You are returning under the terms of your active visa.

To my knowledge, there has never been a visa where people were, after the fact, forced to meet new requirements to keep an existing visa.

Yes, you may be excepted to meet new requirements to extend your visa, but not to keep an active one.

If Thailand ends up granting tens, if not hundreds of thousands of DTVs, it would create an incredible burden to have immigration officers at border crossings vetting people. There’s a reason it’s taking 10-15 business days at embassies.

It is a border officers job to see you you are entering the country legally. It’s very difficult for me to believe they’ll be forced to check through bank statements, etc. for DTV holders.

What’s the benefit of it?

People are anxious because the visa seems too good to be true. And they might stop issuing them one day.

But staying in Thailand has always required flexibility.

So instead of worrying about imaginary futures, just enjoy your time, live your life, and adjust to changes as they come.

What is similar? Extension process ast immigration office now depends on which type of stay you want to extend.

Generally you need to show the same documents at an extension as when you applied for the visa. So to extend a DTV, I'd expect to show up to date documents of what you needed for the visa.

the big question for now is which of the documents you will need again, all or only part of them as with some other visa.

for extension of stay for non-o they have requirements, but that is only to extend the stay, this visa itself is not valid anymore in such a situation, so when you not comply for extension it is simply over.

DTV is different, you ask for extension of a stay of 180 days with another 180 days.

It indeed seems logical to check for requirements then, but what if you do not comply with those requirements?

Your extension might be refused, but you still have a valid visa, you go to the border and reenter.

Or do you think they can make your visa invalid for the rest of the duration if you do not comply with the requirements for extension of stay?

If they cannot make the visa invalid, the checking of the requirements might be something generating work without real effect.

For the 6 months no, but we don’t know about extension or entry after 6 months of 1st entry.
Luit *****************
We already know that when you leave the country and reenter you just get new six months without problems.

Everything might change of course, but it is highly unlikely that IO at airport or landborder will ask for proof of funds in bankaccount.

The extension at immigration office is not yet known because the visa does not yet exist long enough, but a recheck of requirements there is easily possible.

yes we do, but we don’t know what happens after 6 months. They could easily want to see paperwork later on, just like medical might need to still have future appointments and Muay Thai might need to have more teaching booked.

It’s ALL unknown for a couple more months
Luit *****************
@Kevin *******
There are already a lot of people entering the country for their second stamp without any questions, there is no reason to believe this will change.

So your remark that ALL is unknown for a couple of months, just makes no sense, the only thing yet unknown is the extension, not the next entry in the country.

@Luit ****************
yes but you clearly don’t understand the Thai visa system then. But it’s ok. Some will be prepared and others will end up with 60 day exemption stamp as a result if they do actually look at the misuse.
Luit *****************
Explain what I don't understand in the Thai visa system.

DTV is a multi entry visa, valid for 5 years, which means you can enter as many times as you want in this 5 years and each time you get it you will get a 180 day stamp. There are no additional requirements for each new entry.

For each entry you can request an extension at an immigration office, and for an extension there might be additional requirements.

Please explain how somebody with a valid DTV might end up with a 60 day exemption stamp for misusing DTV.

If you’ve no plans to extend then there is no need to keep it.

We don’t yet know what the requirements for an extension will be as yet, but as you aren’t planning to get one then spend away.

@Stuart ********
dont think u need show money for extension.
James ********
@Rex *****
NOT known yet.
Stuart *********
@Rex *****
As stated. No one yet knows what will be needed for an extension.
Luit *****************
@Rex *****
Why do you think? Or is it just a blind guess?
Rex ******
@Luit ****************
bcos I have been applying for other types of visa that need show money, none of it need SM for extension.
Luit *****************
@Rex *****
You wrong about this, for the non-o visa you need to show money each extension, so I guess we should not value your remarks on this too much.

fly in and out every 1 to 3 months. Do you think airport immigration would ask to check?

Anonymous participant No.
Romain ****
You don’t need it once approved
Luit *****************
@Romain ***
not sure yet what is needed for extension.
Romain ****
@Luit ****************
he’s not asking about extension.
Luit *****************
@Romain ***
So what? You cannot be sure that you don't need any proof of funds during the 5 years the visa is valid, especially when you want an extension at some moment, but indeed nowhere is mentioned you have to keep the funds in your bank account to keep the visa valid.

But as long as they don't ask it to be in a Thai bank account, I don't see the problem anyway.
