TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation discusses the feasibility of traveling to Thailand with a new passport after receiving a tourist visa via email, while the original passport remains damaged but readable. The majority of community members suggest that as long as the readable personal information is present in the damaged passport, bringing both the new and old passports should usually suffice. However, some warn that immigration can be unpredictable and recommend reapplying for a new visa or confirming with an embassy for guaranteed advice, considering the risks of potential detention if the situation is not handled properly.
You will most likely have problems. Immigration can be very fussy. Get advice from an agent. Not on here! What might work for one might not work for another!
I traveled with two passports for years because of a visa in the expired one. This is normal practice. However, if the old passport with the visa in it is in rough shape, I would recommend visiting an immigration office of the visa issuing country and have it moved to the new passport. This is generally available in most countries but if your old passport was undamaged, they would probably tell you to just travel with two passports.
I received a new passport while I was in Thailand. My old passport had my Thailand Visa arrival stamp with the expiration stamp. When I left I brought both passports with me. When I got to the counter she called the supervisor. They took me to and empty counter. He stamped my new passport with my departure date and sent me through to the gates. This was just this week.
Safe answer: If you have time, reapply for new visa. Unless, you are from a visa exempt country. Why risk traveling all the way to Thailand, to be denied entry, or be denied boarding by the airline.
Jackie Feldhahn it provided me with the worst answer.
So i got my visa first then my passport got damaged but the first page “info page” was ok, i asked it if i could still travel, it said that’s ok as long as the passport info is readable, so i flew from Kuala Lumpur to Bkk just for them to deny my entry and send me back to Kuala Lumpur.
Stef JB brother my post make a sense if you read it carefully.
obviously I’m not using my old “damaged” passport to enter Thailand, I’m gonna be using the new one and bringing the old is just a proof of the visa issued connected to it.
Koscielny Thierry I guessed so. It definitely didn’t make sense 😂
Theres only 1 way to guarantee you’ll have no issue, and you already know what that is, FB is not the best place to ask, the embassy or call an airport.
FB answers are advice always ranging from accurate to damn crazy 😂
Hmm how did I do that? Canada. They let me keep damaged one as the number was different on the new, undamaged one. But the damaged one had the visa number on it. You’re right not be good advice. Sorry
My passport was accidentally put in the wash while visiting UK. Luckily I was staying 5 miles away from the passport office in Glasgow and I got a new one overnight. My Thai Non O visa was in the washed passport but still legible. I travelled in and out every 28 days with both passports for the remaining time of the visa. This was fifteen years ago though .....
Jan Kenneth Nesland Ah, thats a tricky one. To be honest Im not sure but from what I understand the passport number and visa must match. Can u not go to the embassy and get a new visa or transfer it?
David Jacobs You can do that if the embassy agrees to cancel the current visa first. That said in my opinion, as long as the personal information is still readable, it will most likely be handled the same way as when someone presents a cancelled old passport containing the visa together with a new passport and is stamped into the new one after showing both.
New passport needed. It’s crucial as they will detain you at immigration and you have the choice of waiting for a new passport to come while you’re detained (could be days spent in an airport prison) or they will send you back to the country you came from. It happened to me.
ScenicSquirrel6656 the damaged passport’s first page is readable, so I travelled from Kuala Lumpur to Bkk but they denied my entry and sent me back to Kuala Lumpur, now I got a new passport from Kuala Lumpur and I’m wondering if i can travel with the same visa and both passports or apply for new visa.
You’ll likely get the same advice here as you’ve received in other groups. If your damaged passport is still readable, especially the personal information page, bringing both passports and explaining the situation to immigration will usually work fine. You also generally can’t apply for a new visa while your current one is still valid unless the issuing foreign mission formally cancels the existing visa first.
Jan Kenneth Nesland i do agree with what you’re saying, but someone told me a damaged passport is not like the expired or cancelled one, that made me worried.
Koscielny Thierry I don’t have a definitive answer beyond this, but it’s likely to be handled the same way as when someone has an expired or cancelled passport linked to a visa and presents a new one. As long as the personal information is still fully readable, showing both passports to immigration should normally be sufficient.
