We've had a number of cases recently where staff have been asked to show their work permit by Immigration Officers at the airport.

Yes sometimes the IO asks to see the work permit. This is the case at least at Sadao checkpoint.

I guess it's your company's policy..? For example, I heard some companies keep all foreigner employees' work permit book and not let them keep.

Well once when I came back into the country the immigration officer asked me what I was doing in Thailand. I just showed him the wp and all was fine.
