Hi.

If I get a non-o married visa 90 days, is it possible to do the yearly extension and change for retirement extension?

Or is that up to the office were you do the extension?
Answer summary
The initial extension of a 90-day Non-O visa is typically based on the purpose for which the visa was issued. However, some immigration offices in Thailand may allow changes to a different visa category, such as transitioning to a retirement extension, provided the applicant meets the necessary criteria for the new extension. Experiences vary by location and office; thus, it is advisable to check directly with the immigration office handling your case for specific rules.

Formally, an extension must be based on the same grounds as the original visa. However, since the introduction of e-visas, some immigration offices have allowed a change of basis already at the first extension. Check this with the immigration office where you will apply.

The first extension from a 90 day Non-O visa should be for the purpose the visa was issued. You can change at the end of that first extension assuming you meet the criteria for the extension you want to switch to

well, there is a busy agent in Pattaya, I asked him the same question, and he said that there is no rule that says you can only apply for the first one-year extension under the same reason for which the visa was applied for. He said that a 90-days Non-Imm-O Visa .pdf document does not list the purpose it was issued for. So as long as you can fulfill the requirements needed for the retirement extension, you definitely can apply for it even when your original 90-days Non-Imm-O was issued based on reason family. If it can be done vice versa, I did not ask. I bet it is Immigration specific, so it would not hurt if Per Rollemark visits Immigration and asks them

Most embassies include the reason for the visa in the remarks

a change of reason near the expiry of the current extension, has always been a standard procedure across all Immigration offices in Thailand. Just the change of reason for an application to an extension when somebody is on the 90-days stay permit out of a specific Non-O visa -this probably remains Immigration specific. In Pattaya, the agent I know confirmed that it is possible. I had initially commented in my visa advice that it would not be possible. The agent is regularily reading the advice I hand out in my group, and he interferred, telling me that it indeed is possible in Chonburi/Pattaya

There are still quite a few who have already had this approved at their first extension, with the reason stated in Thai.

it only applies to the first extension, not subsequent ones. Obviously if immigration don't know why the visa was issued anything goes, but that's not normally the case

ya see, it happens. Seems to be embassy specific. Regarding the application to an extension based on a different reason than the visa (not the previous extension!) was issued for, seems to be Immigration specific

here another one. NO remarks about the reason

Graham Seal for peace of mind, here is a Non-Imm-O that contains the condition it was issued for (Retirement). Royal Thai General Consulate Munich

Graham Seal and here is another .pdf Non-Imm-O Visa that also does no list any reason (from the days before October 2023 when they still issued multi entry Non-Imm-O)

this is a Non-Imm-O e-visa. Do you see any reason it was issued for?

Gregor Huettner They normally do, but it is now just a small line in Thai under “Remarks.” Previously, it was clearly stated on the visa itself. That may simply explain why some immigrations or IO’s accept it now.

Graham Seal how long ago ? On the VISA or on the EXTENSION stamp? We talk about the 90-days VISA
