Can I switch from a COVID extension to another visa, or do I need to leave Thailand first?

I have seen some people say that after the expiration of the epidemic visa, they can only leave Thailand and re-enter. An epidemic visa cannot be transferred to another visa. Is that true?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation discusses the issue of transitioning from a COVID-related visa extension to another type of visa in Thailand. Some commenters clarify that what some refer to as an 'epidemic visa' is actually a COVID extension. They indicate that while the COVID extension allows for some flexibility, it is generally advised to consider what visa one initially entered on, as this affects eligibility for conversion. The overall sentiment is that transitioning from a COVID extension to another visa is possible, depending on the circumstances.

Hard to plan travel under these circumstances.

Talked to someone who has a friend working in immigration and said they will most likely extend the covid extension again, but of course we never know for sure until just before. Seems likely they will at least one more time due to limited border run options but I’m planning for a long term option after that.

It's not a visa, it is a covid extension. It is also possible to go from a covid extension to another Visa. It may depend on what the original visa you entered on was, but I entered on a tourist visa, got the covid extension, then applied for a non-o visa based on marriage.

@Wylie ******
so basically:

-you came for vacation

-you were stranded in Thailand because of the pandemic

-feeling lonely, you've found your soulmate

-you got married

Amazing how a pandemic changed people lives 🤣

😂 I believe it happened that way for a lot of people, but not quite for me. I met my wife and moved here just before covid. I went back to the US and was stuck there until they opened up last December. That's when I entered on the tourist visa and got married.

The covid extension is a stop gap device to assist those who for one reason or another cannot travel to their home country. It's purpose has long expired, but immigration have kept it going for their own reasons. You have to look at what visa/extension you were on prior to getting the covid extension to ascertain if you can convert to any other visa. If you came in on tourist/exempt visa, your ability to remain longer is limited if the covid extensions are no longer issued after November 26. If you have something in mind perhaps state what that is and others can advise

TR visa. Thanks.

There is no epidemic visa. Not sure if you are referring to the extension you can get “due to Covid” or the Special Tourist Visa which they introduced during the covid era.
