TLDR : Answer Summary
A friend is inquiring whether someone on a marriage visa in Thailand can switch to another visa without exiting the country during the COVID-19 pandemic. The general consensus is that while one cannot transition directly from a marriage-based extension to another visa type within Thailand, there are alternative options. One can maintain the current marriage extension until it is nearly expired and may potentially reclassify the extension based on a new reason, like employment. Additionally, there is an option to cancel the current extension and apply for a COVID-19 extension, provided it’s done before the specified deadline. It’s crucial for the individual to determine her marital status accurately before proceeding with any visa changes.

She should just bide her time on her marriage extension. If she and her husband agree to divorce, it can be done very quickly, but then her extension based on marriage will be cancelled and she will have to leave straight away. So basically sort out another Visa before divorcing
Different visas/ extensions of stays have different requirements. Some require to leave, some don't

Most people I doubt bother going to get the official divorce. I guess issue is renewal- but if parties separate on good terms that can be worked around too I’m sure.

Can you define
>She has left her Thai husband
Does this mean they are divorced, or just seperated?
she can draw it out for a long time by just not going to the Amphur to sign the divorce decree. That turns it from an uncontested divorce where both parties want to get divorced, come up with an amicable parting of the ways, go to the amphur and sign the decree order to a contested divorce that can take many many months to litigate and hash out

Can she transfer to another VISA, no, she can't go from an extension based on marriage to any VISA inside the country, BUT
she could change the reason for her extension (like if she got a job, etc) from one based on marriage to one based on something else.
OR
She could cancel the extension of stay she's on now at the immigration office and apply for a 60 day covid extension (as long as she did it before March 30th <- the last day they allow covid extensions)
how is this question related to the posters question?

leaving her thai husband doesn't mean she's divorced. AND she can stay on the extension she's on now (married to a thai) until it is almost running out.
