Morning, I am currently on extension of stay based on expat children studying here. My next renewal is in June, as I am turning 50 in April I am considering switching to retirement, can you help to understand if it’s possible without leaving the country and what are the criterias. Thanks. Reason for doing this is that one of my children will be finishing school next year (2022) therefore will have to do it in any case next year. Thanks.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is currently on an extension of stay in Thailand based on having expat children studying here and is considering changing to a retirement visa since they will turn 50. They are seeking clarification on whether this change can be made without exiting the country and what the requirements are. Responses indicate that the user can switch their extension type if they meet the financial criteria (800,000 THB for the retirement extension), and they should check with their local immigration office for detailed requirements.

You can change the reason for 1 year extension. You need to get handout from your local immigration office of requirements for extension based on retirement.

You need to meet financial requirements as people mentioned. If your embassy is providing affidavit, you may be able to use it as proof of funds, too, instead of money in a Thai Bank account.

In case you have workpermit, you need to cancel it prior of application for extension based on retirement.

You can change the reason for your extension of stay in country as long as you meet the financial requirements. For the guardian extension it’s 500k, but the retirement extension needs 800k in your bank 2 months prior to applying and 3 months after. If you want a following extension next year the balance must not drop below 400k and be topped back up to 800 two months prior.

I deleted my comment, I didn’t see that you were raising expat child. You should be able to change your reason for the extension of stay. Go to your local immigration office, and get the handout for a one year extension of stay based on retirement.
