Can I return to Thailand on a 30-day exemption and then extend my stay after my work visa expires?

Hi everyone;

American passport holder.

I am currently on a work permit / visa. That is up on Friday. I am leaving Thailand and staying in Malaysia for a few days. Can I come back on a 30 day exemption and THEN extend 30 days (when the first 30 are up). Or must I get an actual tourist visa in order to extend? Tia

TLDR : Answer Summary
An American passport holder is inquiring whether they can return to Thailand on a 30-day visa exemption after their work permit expires and if they can subsequently extend their stay by another 30 days, or if they need to obtain a tourist visa instead.

Before you leave you have to cancel your work permit and depending on what is inside your passport, you may have to visit the Immigration Office to cancel your Extension of Stay permitted up to ../../..
