TLDR : Answer Summary
Opening a bank account in Thailand while on a DTV (Tourist Visa) is generally not permitted. Most comments confirm that tourists do not qualify for bank accounts, often citing stricter regulations in recent years. However, some users mention that a legitimate reason, such as owning a condominium or being married to a Thai citizen, may facilitate the process. Alternatives like prepaid cards (KBank PAY & TOUR) or digital payment apps (True Money, Revolut) are suggested as viable solutions for managing finances without a bank account.

I once opened an account after telling the branch manager I needed the account to tranafer funds to buy a condo. Once I heard her sales pitch about a condo she wanted to sell she opened the account.

They had a bit crack down last year on overseas money laundering risks so it's very hard to get a bank account with that visa

No. You don't need it though, KBank has an app that lets you pay with QR codes, True Money app also, if you need to transfer money then use Revolut or Wise.

I am reading new policies towards KBank....the government is demanding no new accounts to be open and to freeze existing accounts.

If it's not allowed then don't risk assets being froze or taken. The purpose of getting the DTV was to bypass the $800k baht to be deposited to a bank. Hahaha now everyone wants to open an account with the DTV...its a funny twist.

No? I think you're not reading my comment, I'm talking about Kasikornbank (KBank) PAY & TOUR card which is a prepaid card designed for tourists in Thailand, it allows easy cashless payments via QR code (using the TAGTHAi app). Apply directly at KBank foreign exchange booths (e.g., Suvarnabhumi Airport) using only a passport. Top up at KBank exchange booths; cash can be withdrawn at K-ATM machines. It removes a lot of the need of an account and is quite tourist friendly.

The only other hole is bank transfers for sending money for condo rent or other payments, or receiving money from Thai friends. For that you can use Revolut! Which is SOOO nice, it saved me so many times. Sign up here:

The True Money app also really helps! Most vendors take it these days and it allows you to top up right from the app using.a debit or credit card. It's usable at all 7-11 locations as well where QR doesn't work.

FirstNameLastName I haven’t heard of people opening accounts because they own a condo or whatever. I only heard of people using that to argue against their account being closed.

FirstNameLastName If you are married to a Thai why would you have a DTV? Plus owning a condo does not get you a bank account. You cannot open a bank account now on a DTV, It is a Tourist visa and you cannot open accounts on a Tourist visa anymore.

I am not married to my Thai girlfriend, but if I was, then in our current situation I would stiil not choose marriage visa because of the inflexible in country extension each year, and now we divide our time between Netherlands and Thailand.

But if you are married to a Thai I don't see any good reason anymore for having a Thai bank account

not everyone married goes down that visa route, it can be a nightmare, dtv is an easy option and if you search on here a couple people opened a bank account on dtv.

FirstNameLastName That was before the clampdown. Now no one with a DTV can open an account and those that had them before are slowly having them closed down. I had friends called into their bank told their accounts frozen, Either change from DTV or have their accounts closed
