TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquires about obtaining a Thai driver's license in Chiang Mai while their original driver's license is expired. Responses indicate that without a valid license, the user would need to undergo several tests and provide specific documentation, such as proof of residence and a medical certificate.
and seeing as this ISN'T a thai visa related question, we're done. There's more than enough information on the inter-web to find out about a thai license.
with no valid license from your country you would need to take the computerized multiple choice test, the driving proficiency test (on their small track) the 4 aptitude tests (reaction time, color blindness, peripheral vision and depth perception) AND watch a half a day of safe driving movies too.
You would need a proof of residence document (either from your consulate here in thailand or from the immigration office) a medical certificate AND your passport.
If you had a valid license from the west you would NOT have to take the computerized multiple choice test, not have to drive on their test track and not have to watch a half day's worth of movies.
Scott McCallum Welcome to Thailand. Many Thais dont have to comply with Tod's list nor do most farangs that have a valid driving licence from their home country.
Tod I have no doubt that your information is correct. Having said that one had to wonder how there could be so many horrible Thai drivers. I have ridden with many Thai friends that are perfectly good drivers but have also seen so many outrageous drivers. I myself will never try to drive in Thailand.
