Will Thai immigration accept funds from a high interest savings account as proof of funds?

*update* My bank has opened the account for me and I can freely transfer the funds in and out online. I will transfer the funds once Ive entered Thailand in a few days. Thank you for everyone's input.

Hello fellow DTV holders,

I am a Canadian currently in Canada visiting back home. My bank has informed me that I can place my funds in a high interest savings account where I can get a 4 or 5% interest rate. This account will be accessible online and I can transfer funds immediately to my regular checking and saving accounts in the event I need the funds right away. However I do not have access to this account with my debit card.

Question, if I transfer my funds to the high interest savings account will Thai immigration accept this like my regular account in the event I am asked to show proof of funds?

For obvious reasons getting a 4-5% rate on my 500,000 baht equivalent would be preferable but what I want is not what Thai immigration wants and fairly so.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

TIA 🙏

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user, a Canadian expat, is inquiring whether Thai immigration will accept funds from a high interest savings account as valid proof of funds for their DTV visa. They mention having access to the savings account online but not via debit card. The community responds with varied experiences, suggesting that immediate accessibility of funds is key and recommending checking with the Canadian consulate for clarity. Some users share their success with similar accounts, emphasizing the importance of having statements and considering strategic fund transfers around the time of visa renewal.

Are you asking about obtaining a DTV Extension of Stay inside Thailand at a local Thai immigration office and whether that local Thai immigration office will accept your Canadian bank account??

if so, then which (where) local Thai immigration office are you going to get a DTV Extension at??

of course, as you are located in Canada NOW, then this potential question of obtaining a DTV Extension at a local Thai immigration office inside Thailand can only be pertinent 5 to 6 months after you make Entry into Thailand again....

FYI–

The OP has stated that they already have a DTV (E–Visa?), so this question is NOT about applying for a DTV E–Visa at any Thai Embassy/Thai Consulate, but applying for a DTV Extension of Stay at a local Thai immigration office inside Thailand at least 5–6 months AFTER they make Entry into Thailand again

As you already have DTV, you are fine. Keep it wherever you like

I saw some cases approved with similar accounts though you may be asked for statements

I have the same kind of account, showed them the statements from that exact account, my visa was granted today :)

They did ask for statements from the last 3 months though so you might have to show statements from the previous account where your money was.

Anonymous participant 101 interesting, maybe they've relaxed the rules now

I dont think you need to keep showing the 500k in your account once the visa is granted.

Am I mistaken?

Anonymous participant 101 you do if you want to extend the 180 stamp at the local immigration office. The extension process is more or less the same requirement for getting the actual visa. Much easier to pop out of Thailand just before the expiry of 180 days, and back in for a new 180 day stamp

Anonymous participant 101 I've heard accounts where you can be asked to show proof again upon entering the country or absolutely when getting an extension. In most cases you don't but it's definitely possible.

Anonymous participant 101 right ok. I already hold a DTV so I guess I would have to strategically move the funds 3 months before I need an extension or plan to leave the country and enter back in. Thank you

As long as the money is immediately accessible, Canadian consulates are pretty communicative, you could email the consulate you want to use and inquire

Sorry should have noted that I've already got the DTV. I don't think the Canadian consulate would help me here. Unless I'm missing something?

Anonymous participant generally you have nothing to worry about. There are no real checks unless you are getting an in-country extension which is not advised better to do a border bounce and the passport control officers certainly wouldn't know the nuance of one account over another, if they ever in the rare circumstance decided to ask to see your funds

Excellent and understood.. I've decided to transfer the funds once in Thailand. Border bounce it or a quick trip somewhere is definitely the way I'll go. Thank you

Ast time, I checked you CANNOT use this account for the 800k

@Colin *******
he already has the DTV visa. This question is not related to the 800,000 Thai baht required to obtain the Non O Visa as retiree or its one year extension requirements.

where did you check? Seriously asking?

Anonymous participant both with an agent and immigration told me has to be kept in your savings account only. I wanted to pit funds in an interest paying account also.

interesting. I'll have to look into it further as others have already commented that they had a similar account and were approved.

I'm commenting from an Australian POV, from a similar situation. I had my money in a high interest savings account with my regular bank. Accessible instantly as you have said as well. Mine was accepted no problem at all

thank you. I think I got my answer. Just got to make sure it's baked for 3 months before when needed.

Anonymous participant nowhere does it state the 500k balance is required for 3 months

Anonymous participant My 3 months statement showed more than half of the required 500k THB moved to that account within the week I applied.

You will need to check with the embassy you are applying from. Some embassies consider immediately accessible as having no need to transfer funds into the account. You can transfer funds back to the higher rate account after approval. Transfer to regular account for the application.

Thank you. I should have clarified I already hold a DTV. So my concern lies in when immigration asks me for proof when entering the country or getting an extension. As a previous commenter said I would likely have to do it 3 months before entering the country again or getting an extension.
Andi ***********
Anonymous participant oh I see. For extension needs to be in a regular account. There is no mandatory requirement to show your bank account on arrival and extremely rare to be asked on arrival. I would keep it on the higher rate account if not extending at an IO. Much easier to do a.border run

right. I'm not one who likes to take risks generally speaking no matter how small. I may wait until I have entered Thailand next week then move the funds after just in case. Appreciate your input.

Anonymous participant the only requirement for verifying the funds again is if you apply for the extension inside Thailand. Those that simply cross the border every 179 days and immediately returned have had no problems, with just a few being asked to show the bt20,000 technically required to enter as a tourist, used when someone sets off their red flags, as they stereotype, and profile, also. No one has been asked to verify the bank account used with a border bounce, or any leaving and returning. The only time is, as I mentioned, if you get the extension inside Thailand.
