I need to switch over to a non-o visa. I would like to leave Thailand just before my current visa expires, return as visa exempt, and then go to immigration to apply for the non-o.
Is that a viable plan, and can I go immediately to immigration and get the non-o after entering visa exempt or do i have to wait for X days before my exception expires?

TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, it is a viable plan to switch to a Non-O visa by leaving Thailand just before your current visa expires and returning under visa exemption. You can go to immigration immediately after re-entry to apply for the Non-O visa, provided you meet the required conditions, which generally include having at least 14-21 days remaining on your current visa. Additionally, ensure that you have the necessary funds in your bank account as some immigration offices may require this to be in place two months prior to your application.
