TLDR : Answer Summary
The community discusses the challenges of exchanging USD $100 bills that have minor tears in Thailand. While some banks deny such bills, others, particularly exchanges in malls or airports, may accept them without issue. Personal experiences highlight inconsistency, with certain banks like TT and Kasikorn reportedly rejecting even slightly damaged bills. Participants suggest that larger banks might accept torn notes but could require a lengthy process.

Isn't it a farce? As though they can't accommodate a bill with a tiny tear or blemish. Unbelievable, characteristic inflexibility. May the force be with you all!
I had undesirable results from Chinese owned banks; especially, in Indonesia. Mark down on bills with the slightest marks or wrinkles etc. Not sure about Thailand banks.

Ah. So basically, we incur the fees to cover their overhead... That's life 馃槀
They end up at the Federal Reserve in the USA that exchanges them for new.
But the issue, half way across the planet, is getting them there. Maybe foreign banks have an agreement with a Western Bank or perhaps they use a special courier.
But the issue is also time and expense to exchange them. They cannot just reuse them in Asia right away.
But don't worry, they don't lose $100 for a torn bill. But there is a cost to them via money and/or time.
