Hello everyone I’ve applied from my home country. If the visa is not granted before my flight is due can I enter with normal visa and then go out of the country when they issue the DTV and come back to Thailand with the newly issued DTV visa ? Thank you

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around whether one can enter Thailand on a normal visa while awaiting a DTV visa application. Most comments confirm it is possible, but caution is advised regarding the timing of visa approval and entry procedures. Users emphasize the importance of checking for visa approval before going through immigration. There are also mentions of variations in processing and conditions based on the consulate.

Please state what consulate you applied at. And while you're at it, tell us when you applied.

Royal Thai Embassy Bucharest and yesterday. Does it make a difference where you apply ?

@Velin *******
each consulate will usually post the processing times for visa applications. So yes if you are in a hurry or have a deadline you should be aware of the processing times.
John *******
Here it says it will be rejected if in Thailand “during the visa process”

@John ******
it's the Netherlands consulate, not all consulates impose requirements or restrictions

@John ******
it's saying you can't already be in Thailand during the application process. Says nothing about leaving the Netherlands or entering Thailand.
John *******
@Wannikea ********
it says you need to be inside the Netherlands the entire time of the visa process and if you leave the Netherlands (not just enter Thailand), you will be rejected

@John ******
one embassy/consulate out of a few hundred. Hardly a trend setter.

- Why does your argument change every time I respond? You thought you were right and said it didn’t say what I said it says, now you are saying something else. Have you applied for a DTV yet? If you think your view is correct, why not ask your embassy when applying and see what type of response they give?

Disregard the highlighted portion. It was highlighted for another purpose. Look at the last line

This topic has been discussed before on this forum. The consensus was that while the visa application is in process, you may not travel to the Kingdom

@Paul *******
only certain consulates have stated this restriction

@Velin *******
It's just a precaution for unnecessary leaving and reentering to activate the visa.
Deepak *******
Yes you can.

valuable suggestions to check your email before presenting your passport to the IO; otherwise, you may have to leave and reenter unnecessarily.

Yes, assuming you applied online thru the e-visa website, check your email before you pass through Thai immigration, sometimes the visa might arrive just in time before you hand your passport over to be stamped.

- it says they (Thai consulate in Netherlands) has the authority to issue visas for people who are within their borders. By saying “they have the authority” implies the authority has been given to them by MOFA. Do you think the MOFA gives different types of requirements to different embassies? Have you seen any notice that actually says you can travel?

@John ******
I'm sure you're a nice guy and all John but I'm not going to get into this long running debate with you. People don't get their visas in time all the time and enter, then bounce out to activate it later. I've sat in thai Visa forums for almost 10 years and I'm just speaking from experience, the experience of seeing people tell their tale, and the experience of admins suggesting this recourse. You ask if the ministry of foreign affairs gives different types of requirements to different embassies? I don't know that but I know a lot of embassies just do whatever they want to do. Forinstance if you want to go buy a DTV in New Zealand 40,000 baht. Being a consul general or ambassador has its privileges.

- We all know that many people “trick” formal systems, but that does not mean it is legal/allowed way. If you think this is the legal route, then show any evidence. You can’t.
Wannikea *********
@John ******
you copy text from 1 solitary embassy website interpret it as you will, and now say it's gospel across the earth. You need to show the evidence that this standalone embassy policy is the norm.
John *******
@Wannikea ********
- so I showed evidence from one embassy and you show evidence from no embassies. Go ahead, email one and ask them, if not, which embassy will you apply for a DTV? I will email for you

@John ******
it's quite common over the years that for various visa applications using the e-visa system the visa didn't arrive in time for the applicants flight, and so the applicant arrived using visa exempt and upon visa approval did a bounce. All I'm saying is that a consulate may choose to impose a requirement.
John *******
@Wannikea ********
Being common doesn't imply it is allowed. I have not seen any guidance anywhere that says that. In fact, most embassy's websites tell you to give yourself a month to process the visa. However, please share any guidance where the embassy says if your visa is not available in time to head to Thailand on visa exempt and do a border bounce when processed.

@John ******
I'll just say this, you can get a visa and come to Thailand or you can come to Thailand without a visa, so for those that don't have a visa they can enter visa exempt. That is what the visa exempt scheme is for. If one or two embassies want to put a requirement on Visa applicants that they must wait in the country for their visa and not proceed to Thailand then I'm sure they will put that notice on their website as a few have, not all, not many, only a few.

@Wannikea ********
- So there is nothing that you can reference? Got it. Before DTV, what visa would someone apply for and then head to Thailand without it, planning to just do a border run when approved? It wasnt a thing I can see people doing prior, so that is why some embassies have nothing on their website. They do say it can take a month, so give yourself enough time, not apply one week before flying and if you don’t get it, wait and do a border run.
Wannikea *********
@John ******
a variety of visas being applied for wouldn't arrive on time, everything from non O or tourist visa or ED, the whole gambit, families booked their trip applied for visas that didn't arrive in time, and yes probably the majority waited till the last minute or later to apply.
John *******
@Wannikea ********
for most people who got tourist visas (before visa exempt was 60 days) did so because they wanted to stay longer in Thailand without doing a border run. Leaving for Thailand without receiving it, to then do a border run, kind of seems counterintuitive.

Yes you can do that
