TLDR : Answer Summary
The ability to enter Thailand on a visa exemption and change to an ED visa largely depends on your nationality and the current immigration regulations. Many users suggest entering on a proper tourist visa instead, as visa exemptions can complicate the transition to an ED visa. Stories shared by other travelers indicate the possibility to apply for an ED visa while in Thailand, but it may come with challenges and varying success rates based on the local immigration office's current policies. It is generally recommended to have adequate time left on your visa for processing and to avoid any schools that charge extra 'visa processing' fees, as these might be scams.

Yes you can do to the immigration. In krabi you need to pay 15.000 bath without leave the country then pay 28.000 bath To study a year at school

Get a TR visa in your home country. You will get 2 months and possibility to extend another month inside the country for 1,900฿.

Preparing the ED visa documents can be a lengthy process. Can take a week, or maybe even 1 month for some schools.

Also, I believe you need 15 days remaining on your current visa (21 days in Chiang Mai and a few other provinces), to make the switch to an ED visa. Visa exemption stamp is 30 days + 30 days if you extend, so your school will have little time to prepare your documents. So TR/SETV might be better.

my school prepped my documents in a day and was ready to meet me at immigration a week later.

There were no "visa processing fees" but obviously i had to enroll in their actual thai language program and there was a cost associated with that
Craig ********
ah, yeah... i was already in country on a tourist visa. They also met me at immigration and the whole thing was super smooth
Keven ****
@Craig *******
Wow, that's fast. Me it was 1 month. Although my documents were for an ED visa outside the country, so maybe more documentation needed.
Keven ****
And avoid any school that asks for "visa processing fees" or "visa renewal fees." This is a scam practice that some bad schools do. A visa costs 1,900฿ at immigration to get the ED visa, and 1,900฿ to renew your visa every 3 months. Nothing more.

just set up your own limited company and get urself a 1 year non b + work permit are much easier and cheaper

@Maarten ***
Not easier or cheaper. Cheaper route is to get set up as an employee on a BOI company.

If you have to make your own company you have to cover the setup and accounting fees plus your income/SS tax plus the same for 4 Thai employees as well as show some kind of lease on the property your employees are working as well as find people to be your employees for immigration inspection and any future random inspections.

You could set up your own BOI but that costs a lot more to set up.

Setting up your own company, plus all the taxes for you and your staff would cost around twice what an Ed visa would and that doesn’t include leasing a commercial or retail space and making it look like it’s an actual operating business.

You could get around needing a commercial/retail space if you rent a house big enough to set up some desks to make it look like your “staff” work out of your home but still, it would cost around double for the first year and around the same as an Ed visa for subsequent years.

Being hired as a BOI employee I’ve seen prices range from 65-300k a year all inclusive.

So even on the low end it’s basically the same as an Ed visa.

company really cheaper? Could you quantify that please?
Maarten ****
@Stefan *********
there are agent can set up limited company for you and provide you 4 “Thai staff “ and grant 1 work visa
Stefan **********
@Maarten ***
my information is about 100k per year for everything incl. staff. Can you tell me something about the price you pay, please?
Maarten ****
@Stefan *********
I pay less than 80k and if I go to Cambodia to process my non b it will cheaper around 12k
Stefan **********
@Maarten ***
thanks. 20 year elite visa is 50k per year. So I can't follow how much cheaper and easier?
Maarten ****
@Stefan *********
It’s depend …if u get work permit I believe you can apply credit card and car lease from bank ..and elite visa not really entitle to apply bank finance product from bank ? But for sure, those people who able afford elite visa , I surely they definitely able to afford everything in Thailand live like a king lol

@Maarten ***
You can study on a tourist visa, you don't need to set up a company!!
Martinello **********************
how do you do this
Steve ********
@Maarten ***
Why set up a company for an ED visa? I don't understand
Maarten ****
@Steve *******
nono...i mean in case they reject your ed visa like other said
Dennis *********
I was there only a few months ago. It was then recommended and suggested that ED was only being approved when already in Thailand. i.e. Language and Thai boxing. Visa exempt is only 30 days but can get 30 day extension while applying for ED visa, but you would want to start that right away and not wait until you have only a week left. A lot of scams but if you really plan to attend vs. just getting it for the purposes of staying I don't think you will have much of a problem.

No
Kal ********
No visa on arrival. Must be tourist visa got from a consulate outside of thailand. And yes better if your passport isn't full of other thailand stamps. Perhaps get a new passport in your home country before you try.
Keven ****
@Kal *******
That's false. You can convert a visa exemption stamp to an ED visa inside the country. Whether or not the school will have the time to prepare the ED visa documents in time depends on the speed of the school.
Kal ********
@Keven ***
I checked with three schools in Bangkok, they all told me the same thing. I know rules are a bit different in Samui. Did you find some school in Bangkok that could change the visa on arrival for you? And how long ago was that? I heard the current generation of immigration officers are quite strict.
Keven ****
@Kal *******
They all told you what?
Kal ********
@Keven ***
That A visa on arrival switch is not possible. That I needed to go out of the country and come back with the longer 60 days tourist visa given by a Thai consulate.
Keven ****
@Kal *******
Sorry, I don't know how Bangkok schools work as of right now, or all other provinces. OP didn't say where she will be living. I know where I live it's possible.
Adrien **********
It is possible but you should get a longer visa to be safe. The new immigration boss is more strict than before, ED aren't that easy anymore but it will probably be ok if your passport in blank.

The ED visa is effectively no more. I just happened to watch an interview today on the Thaiger channel with a lawyer in Bangkok who said they haven't an issued one in Bangkok for a long time. Apparently now you have to get official accreditation from your university in your own country.
Keven ****
@Tony ********
That's very strange. Would be interested in a source on this. ED visas are still being offered. I contacted my private school and a university just two weeks ago.
Victor *******
@Tony ********
Thats not quite so.. I just applied for Thai language school and they arranges it for everyone enrolling to their school without exiting the country. Costs 2000 baht.
Adrien **********
@Tony ********
they still do in some area, but it is limited and expensive. Big difference if it is your first year in Thailand or not.
Tony *********
@Stuart ********
just edited my comment
Klaus ******
I was at the Thai consulate in Malaysia and they refused me a study visa. They told me that my purpose was to stay in Thailand not to study!I had paid for school, the. Flight to go to penang and the hotel...
Steve *******
@Klaus *****
what school was this at?
Klaus ******
@Steve ******
ao nang school.. The school is very nice..
Craig ********
i would not try that, i have heard lots of bad stories. Get a real tourist visa, then come, then change to ED visa. If you enter visa exempt you risk not being able to get the ED without leaving the country. It might work out for you, but I would not risk it.
Paul **************
just done it successfully.

Enter on visa on entry 30 days, apply immediately for an education permit (takes 28 days) then apply for education visa, another 28 days. I would do it with the assistance of a good language school
Maarten ****
@Craig *******
lots of case agent just pay money under table to immigration officer and it can bypass leave the country to change the status of the visa
Aristo *******
Tourist visa. Trust me it will save you troubles and spend more time as total in thailand

@Aristo ******

Stuart *********
That would depend on your nationality (the ability to enter visa exempt that is).

korean passport is that ok?
Stuart *********
@Pam ****
Republic of Korea do get visa exempt. They also work under a bilateral agreement for 90 day entry, but I’m not familiar with that arrangement.
