TLDR : Answer Summary
While there is no one-year ED visa available in Thailand, travelers can convert a tourist visa to a 90-day ED visa if they have the necessary school documentation and sufficient days remaining on their current visa. Some schools may require the individual to leave Thailand to apply for the ED visa at a consulate abroad, and costs for processing the visa conversion may vary.

Further to what Brandon said: Some schools will tell you that you would have to leave the country to get an ED visa from a consulate abroad. Others will try to charge you north of 10k baht baht merely for changing the visa in-country. Be cautious about both kind of schools.
