Me and my friend have a one way ticket to Thailand and we plan on going to KPT school to learn Thai for 6/9 months. I have looked on the Embassy website but can’t get through on the phone for advice. Which VISA would we need to apply for to stay in Thailand whilst we wait the 6 weeks for KPT school to issue our ED VISA?

TLDR : Answer Summary
To stay in Thailand while waiting for your ED visa from KPT school, you can apply for a Tourist Visa which typically allows for a 60-day stay, extendable by another 30 days. Some users suggest that airlines may require proof of onward travel, especially if you have a one-way ticket, and remind that entering Thailand is at the discretion of immigration officers, hence an onward ticket may be necessary.

If from visa exempt country, 30 day entry and extend at immigration for another 30 days. Or apply for 2 month tourist visa online and can also extend for 30 days in Thailand

You may need an onward ticket out of thailand thai immigration won't give 2 hoots its your airline that may jack up because it's their responsibility to return you home if you are denied entry for what ever reason entry to Thailand is entirely dependent on the IO infront of you at time of entry remind yourself entry to Thailand is never a guarantee they don't need a reason to deny anyone entry it's their country Chokh di

Thai asked me where my connecting flight ticket is, if I have non, they won't let me board. I have a year Visa so this was fine, but he said with tourist visa they wouldn't have let me board. And I know 2 others one on etihad and one on Qatar that couldn't fly because of this.

A Tourist Visa will get you 60 days entry (depending on the nationality of your passports) which can be extended if necessary for another 30 days to give you 90 days total to get everything in place.
