TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, you can purchase a new car in Thailand with a DTV visa. To register the car in your name, you'll need a Certificate of Residence (COR) from immigration, which requires a current TM.30 form, copies of your passport, entry stamp, and possibly your lease agreement. Additionally, while some buyers have reported no document requirements apart from the funds to purchase the car, it's recommended to verify this with your dealership since some may require extra documentation.

Yes you can. I just bought a car two days ago, you need certificate of residence, passport and visa. I Paid the full amount, no loan.

I bought a new car back in October with a loan from Navy Federal Credit Union. A Certificate of Residence (COR) is needed for registering the car in your name. The dealership offered to act as my agent to obtain the COR on my behalf but wanted something like 5k baht extra. I declined the service and got the COR myself at Chonburi Immigration.

Obtaining the COR requires a current TM.30 and copies of your passport and lease. We have a long term lease on a house here and I’d flown in and out since my last TM.30 report in August. In the past that seemed to be ok since I didn’t change addresses, but Chonburi now wants a fresh TM.30 after every re-entry regardless of address. I had already been in Thailand for a few weeks but didn’t have any issues getting the TM.30 done.

On a related note, a few months later in January they tried to fine my gf several thousand baht for a late TM.30 registration when she went to extend her tourist visa. She ended up using a border run service instead.

So Chonburi back to wanting a TM30 upon overseas travel. They have flipped back and forwards on this a few times. Last year there was no need when I went to Vietnam twice. A pal just did it the other week after a Vietnam trip - I wondered why he did it.

Yes, you can buy a car but you'll need to pay full right away.

I used a loan from my bank in the US to buy mine. I just had to put down a deposit to hold the vehicle until the funds were available to complete the purchase.

taxes are huge you must be rich

You are probably thinking about certain imported cars. There are many factories here so no import tax (although a bit of a downturn at the moment).

Quite a few big names manufacture here ie Toyota, Nissan (cutting from 2 factories to 1), BYD, Ford, GM, Mercedes etc. The big tax is on imported luxury cars like Bentley, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Maserati etc

@Greg *******
Mercedes and Nissan still cost much much more than they do back in Australia. A c43amg is around 60-70k in Australia, here they’re anywhere from 80-100k for same year / km

We are not discussing car prices - we are discussing taxes on cars.

@Greg *******
lol ok? And I’m saying car prices are expensive here. Guy commented about having to be rich to own many cars here and he’s not wrong. Didn’t know you decided what’s talked about in the group
Andrew ******
Cars resell at higher values here. Idk about the luxury car topic but Hondas and the like, in my estimation, are about the same. Because even though you do pay more you’re able to re-sell a car. I honestly think it’s more or less a knock buying a car here vs my home country in terms of cost after resell.

The guy commented on car taxes. Cheese is expensive too. How much is it in Australia?
Marb ********
@Greg *******
do you think car prices are almost twice as expensive for no reason? Still huge taxes on Mercedes..
Greg ********
@Marb *******
That point is not in dispute - please read above. You are merely repeating what has already been posted - import tax on cars is high. How much is it on cheese - I thought we had moved on?
Marb ********
@Greg *******
you said the ones manufactured here don’t have big tax it’s only imported luxury cars. You’re wrong lmao

and a Residence Certificate for the transfer

No documents per se to purchase the car but you’ll need a residence certificate from immigration to register it in your name.

You’ll probably need to provide copies of passport, entry stamp and visa as well, but I’m not 100% sure on those.
