Can I apply for a Thai DTV or should I consider a soft power visa given my income sources?

Has anyone gotten a DTV but has mysterious sources of income. I make approx $10000 a month but don’t have a company- I stream on twitch from time to time and have subs on patreon. ( no nudity or anything at all) and have a big Twitter page with 50k where I get sent gifts under $. Or should I apply for soft power. Thanks :)

TLDR : Answer Summary
The poster seeks advice on whether to apply for a Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) or a soft power visa despite having unorthodox income sources (Twitch streaming and Patreon). Responses emphasize the importance of transparent documentation and the potential challenges due to the ambiguity of job descriptions. Some commenters suggest going for the soft power option to avoid complications, while others believe a strong application can still succeed. Key considerations include explaining income sources, tax responsibilities, and the legalities around content creation in Thailand.

Mysteruous sources would not pass the document check mark if you apply as a business owner/ workstation etc. i would save a nice savings account and have this account sponsor me with one of the soft routes. Stay simple im going to thailand to learn how to cook thai food. Why ? I always love the country and the culture. How you plan to achieve this i have savings in this account. End of the story. Good luck 🙏

There's no issue applying under Workation as a freelance content creator. Write a cover letter explaining more about your Twitch channel and income you get from there. Include in the letter:

1. Write a short cover letter explaining your income (e.g. $10k/month from Twitch, Patreon, Twitter, etc ), nature of your work and type of content.

2. Explain how you plan to continue your work in Thailand — for example, streaming or creating lifestyle content from here, highlighting Thai food, culture, or just the cost of living/remote work lifestyle. That helps position your relocation under the freelancer narrative.

3. Include links or your socials (Twitch, Twitter, Patreon).

We've seen content creators get approved after explaining their work with the cover letter. The approving officers are not unreasonable, ultimately you have more than enough funds to support yourself in Thailand while living here that is what they are most concerned about. All the best with your application!

You can try to apply for the DTV Workcation visa on your own, but it may not be as strong as applications from others who have more supporting documents.

In case your application is rejected, we strongly advise not switching from Workcation to Soft Power immediately, as most Thai embassies don’t approve of this and often issue an automatic rejection for a new visa application.

So please think twice before making any decision — your case might not be as simple as it seems. Nowadays, even well-prepared applications with full documentation are being rejected due to the high volume of submissions.

It appears that Thai embassies may now be using a quota system for DTV visas.

You don’t need to have a company to apply for the workcation. I am self-employed and I don’t have a business number because that’s how it works from where I am from. But I showed my website, contracts, designations, and income taxes info.

Build a portfolio of what you do and make sure it’s a strong one. Highlight the payments you receive monthly and match that with your taxes. Depending on where you apply, you may not need to show your monthly income. If you think your portfolio is not strong enough, attach a letter of explanation.

So many comments try to push people towards soft power. you have the money on reserve and the 10k a month proves you won't be taking jobs from the locals and won't be a bum. At 10k a month, applying as a freelancer won't hurt your pocket. Go for it. Highlight your twitch account and Patreon and create a document that states how you bring in money and don't plan to take work from the locals.

Registering as an offshore company can simplify the process. Ignore conflicting advice. Your taxes are your responsibility. For content streamers, I recommend registering in the Seychelles or British Virgin Islands (BVI) as a self-employed business in your home country. This requires minimal paperwork to prove you’re a legitimate business. Authorities typically don’t ask about the content you create, as long as you’re not earning income in Thailand. By showing bank statements with income from outside Thailand, you should avoid scrutiny.

I did not get that from them explicitly. What did come over as priority were visitor numbers and GDP growth. Reading between the lines I think that the impression is remote workers provide more to the economy. One off the cuff remark by an attendee, not an official was nobody is doing Muay Thai or Cookery for 5 years. I am not getting into a debate about GDP contribution lol. The other thing mentioned was ease of extension and if re-entry requirements change in the future by immigration

interesting, and thanks for sharing. I guess as long as I have the 500k in my account and Muay Thai training pre booked upon entry then I should still be ok

Should be absolutely no issue. That is IF, and a big if right now, Immigration tighten up re-entry rules. Entry numbers are the priority right now from both presentations yesterday. They will favour entries over extensions I would suspect. :-)

could you tell a bit more about it? 😊What gave you this impression? Who was the speaker? It's very interesting, and it might be a good thing to post in a group, not just in comments (if you have time, of course).

It was a DTV promotion by TAT. Two events yesterday and I have posted the event this afternoon. As for Workaytion the reasoning behind it was exactly what is said in this group every day and I have posted today. DM me if you want.

There have been other people posting about successful applications as streamers / YouTube content creators. It will likely depend on your nationality and what embassy you apply to. But if you put together a strong portfolio, explain your income with bank statements, can show tax paid, I think you have chances of success.

So the thing is if your income comes from you being on YouTube or TikTok technically according to the visa rules if you’re gonna do that here, if you’re gonna use here to make the money you’re not allowed to. Technically.

The visa has no business in Thailand. Your business needs to be from outside of Thailand so if your content is coming from Thailand, that is Thailand business and I know a bunch of people are gonna come and fight me on this because they always do welcome to Thailand, where the foreigners hate each other.

"mysterious sources of income."

Income should not be mysterious, its only mysterious when you are tax evading.

Reading more you describe "adult content", adult content cannot be made in Thailand.. Proceed at your own will and you will suffer the consequences. Thailand isn't an OnlyFans hub.

Anonymous participant I think you are a sole trader business which will be high taxes .

You should get an limited company to reduce your taxation

I don’t see how they will block you because the only difference will be a limited company set up

I pay high taxes as self employed and it ducks. Reason for not starting a business is because most of my income runs through Stripe and they consider what I do “adult- content” and may block my payments. I have tried before. Even though there isn’t any nudity or any of the likes involved. I’ll try to find a loophole around soon.
