TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, you can apply for a Non-O visa based on retirement while in Thailand, which requires you to have 800,000 baht in a Thai bank account. Unlike the Non-OA visa, the Non-O does not require health insurance. However, the funds must be in the bank for a specified duration, and you need to reside in Thailand for a few months to meet the visa requirements. Additionally, it's essential to confirm the specific immigration office's policies, as practices may vary.
NON-O RETIREMENT VISA RESOURCES / SERVICES
  • Go to the Retirement Visa Section for information on requirements, including age restrictions, financial requirements, and necessary documentation.
  • For immediate assistance, contact Thai Visa Centre directly via LINE at @ThaiVisaCentre or Email them.
  • Explore recent discussions by using the Non-O Retirement Visa tag in the search box at the top of the page.

Are you sure that the Non-O ("retirement") visa for people aged 50+ is the right one for you if you do a lot of international traveling?

Bear in mind that the 800k THB need to "mature" in the bank for several months before you can apply for the visa or an extension of stay, and you'd probably need to live in Thailand for 3-4 months at the same address (to avoid complications) to go through the process of first getting a 90 day extension and then the 1 year extension.

And if you hold this visa you're not permitted to work in Thailand so your living expenses (including, if appropriate, topping up the 800k before applying for an extension of stay) need to come from other sources.

The non OA has an insurance requirement. The non O does not.

Thank you for correcting my misinformation, folks. I'll remember to get it right next time.

it's just so consulate specific for that Non-O that it's always best to look at the thai consulate in the country you're applying for it in to see what their particular requirements are

If you apply for a Non O visa in example the Netherlands or Belgium you need to have a health insurance.

only for a limited time

could u explain limited time?

look at the Thai Embassy or Consulate website for the country you are applying for the Non O Visa.

NOT all are requiring the health insurance and those who do are asking for 90 days, which is the time you will be stamped in on arrival into Thailand.

@Keith ***********
, not exactly correct. The requirement of insurance for Non-O depends on where you apply for. But right, it's not required for Non-O retirement inside Thailand.

There is no such "800k baht in a bank visa". It is a Non O based on Retirement Visa.

do u know what Non O stands for?

Non O based on Retirement Visa is actually according the correct terms:

a Non-Immigrant O (other) Visa based on being over 50 years of age and gives you a stay of 90 days inside Thailand, but populair named retirement visa.

During these 90 days you can apply for the 1 year Extension of Stay at a local Immigration Office based on being over 50 years of age and willing to sit out the rest of your life inside Thailand, populair called retirement visa.

"rest of my life in Thailand" was in your reply. What does that mean?

I think what you're asking about is the Non-O visa/extension based on being over 50 (retirement) where you bank 800K baht in a thai bank account in your name only and apply in country at your immigration office..

The short answer is yes, you can (with caveats)

Sadly, you don't mention where you are in the 513k sq km that comprise Thailand. ๐Ÿ˜• There are OVER 80 offices in the country (some WILL issue that visa some will NOT issue it)

So how about we get a little more info from you first?

Tod Daniel Wow, thank you Tod. Yes I am now in Chiang Mai and will be here until August 25 when my extension of my original 30 day tourist visa expires. After a few days in Malaysia, I will return to Thailand by land to the area around Surat Thanni for a few weeks before returning to the US September 25.

No Thai bank account yet.

I have extended my 30 day tourist visa by another 30 days at the Central Festival Thai Visa office which now expires August 25.

agreed. Set up bank account in Thailand now to be fully funded say 90 days before I come back to Thailand with a 60 day visa issued from a US Thai consulate online before my arrival.
Tod *********
@Mark ********
okay well them WHEN you come back you're gonna hafta decide where you're gonna be "based" because you're going to have to use that address and immigration office until you go thru the process of getting the 90 day Non-O visa and then the year extension issued <- which takes about 2 months to get thru the process.

I'd get a bank account open up there (if that's where you're gonna be) and when you come back get the 800K baht transferred in to it

In Chiang Mai you need a minimum of 21 days left on your current stamp (30 day free entry, 60 day tourist visa or a 30 day extension on one of those) to get apply for the 90 day Non-O visa.

So you might consider getting a 60 day tourist visa from the thai consulate online in the US before you come back (to give you plenty of time to get your documentation together)

@Tod ********
am I allowed to leave Thailand and reenter with this type of visa?
Tod *********
@Mark ********
you're gonna have to wait the under review period for the Non-O visa (in Chiang Mai 15 business days)

Then you would go back, get the 90 day Non-O inked in

If you needed to leave you would buy a re-entry permit. It'd be valid ONLY for that 90 days.

It goes without saying (but I'll say it anyway ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) You'd have to be back so you could apply for the year extension before that 90 days runs out..

However year extensions are issued on the spot the day you apply and once you get the year extension you can then buy a multiple re-entry permit and come and go the rest of the year as much as you want

can I open a bank account now and fully fund it in the 90 days before I return to Thailand? Do you have any bank preference?
Ellie *******
@Mark ********
you can transfer your funds now to prepare for your in-country Non-O application in future.
