Ok. Bit of advice please.

I’m in Thailand on a tourist visa.

With intent to return and stay.

Have my residential paperwork.

Was told by immigration I could go and open a bank acc.

Bank said tourist cannot open an account.

All good. Need a non immigrant O visa.

Went online. Started to fill out form until it asked me what country I was in.

No Thailand on the list. So I typed it in there.

Didn’t work.

I’m thinking I have to be elsewhere to apply??

Is this right.
Answer summary
The original poster is currently in Thailand on a tourist visa and intends to apply for a Non-Immigrant O visa but is confused about the application process. The responses predominantly indicate that the Non-O visa must generally be applied for outside of Thailand, typically at a Thai embassy in a neighboring country or one's home country. Some users mention that it's possible to apply for a Non-O from within Thailand at immigration offices under certain conditions, however, this is less common. There's also a consensus that individuals on a tourist visa cannot open bank accounts, which adds to the complexity of their situation.

You say you’re going to leave Thailand before you come back

Just wait until you get back to your home Country and apply for your Non-o 90 day visa

An agent can do it here in Thailand, but it’s fairly expensive for what you can do online and very easily at home.

When you come back, and this is where people have different opinions, I recommend getting with an agent and letting them do your retirement extension.

It’ll cost you about $900-$950, in most cases. And they will guide you and do everything for you.

They will set up your bank account

they will take you to immigration

And a very quick time, you will have a retirement extension for one year, which actually turns out to be about 15 months your first year

I thought the agent was well worth it

I went back and even had them do a Thai drivers license for me. I’m not sure that’s needed cause nobody’s ever asked for it, but I didn’t trust the international because there’s different rules that apply to the international about getting it. Stamped when you get here.

I do have a car here and I do drive everywhere and I don’t want to get myself into trouble if there’s an accident, with the insurance company

some people will say if you put ฿800,000 in the bank it’s super easy so don’t use an agent

Again, contact an agent first before you do anything

I would contact them on this trip and ask them what you need to do and they will guide you step-by-step and tell you what to do before you come back

It just takes all the headaches out of it and pretty much no lines or mistakes

Yes. Have to be outside the country to apply for non-o. However…. If you are willing to pay, a visa agent can take your visa exempt passport and turn it into the non-o plus 1 year extension. If this is just a visit and you’re leaving the country soon, just wait until you’re out of Thailand and apply, then go through the hoops when you return on your non-o.

You can apply for non-o within Thailand but at the Immigration office and not online. Each IO will have a list and remaining days left requirement of the current visa but without a bank account you will not be able to do in country. It really needs to be applied at the home country’s embassy website and use local bank acount statements showing savings of 800,000 baht equivalent.

get an agent. search for Visa agent in Google maps call up the top five agents and tell them your situation and see how much they're going to charge you. you're getting deep into the murky end of getting a resident Visa and odds are likely that you would complete everything that you think you need to complete and they will reject you.

They're not useless. They are literally the only way to get a visa from a Thai embassy.

Non oa is applied for in your home country. Non o can be completed in home country … you get 90 then in Thailand you get the 12 month extension. You can also apply in the kingdom as well

For in the kingdom…

The 15-Day Rule: You must have at least 15 days of valid stay remaining on your tourist visa stamp at the exact time you submit your application. If you have fewer than 15 days left, immigration will deny the request, and you will be forced to leave the country to apply

Best thing to do is fill everything out online and save it. Jump a plane to Vietnam it will take a week or more but that's a good one. Make sure you have the 3 months collated of your bank statements. And it needs to be a bank not some 401K not some credit union they're really picky they want to see a known national Bank. The picture they're real picky they want you to have like a white shirt on possibly a tie but it's got to be like a white collared shirt. They still are going to kick it back on you once you enter it in Vietnam. They're going to ask for a copy of the boarding pass that you got on the plane to Vietnam so make sure you have that. Also they're going to ask you to tell the reason why you want to go and retire in Thailand. Simple but they're going to ask that. So it's not going to be like a one two three it happens immediately. It's going to take about a week to week and a half but just hang out in Vietnam and have a good time. But remember do not submit it till you're in Vietnam. And you have to pick which part of Vietnam you're in Saigon or Hanoi. Once you do all that you can jump back into Thailand and open a bank account.

Rits Meter Maid totally incorrect. A non O can be applied for at most major immigration offices in Thailand and it can also be done at Thai consulates in neighboring countries

BreezyGiraffe4639 ..not most.udon thanks a large immigration office. They will not let you get a non o. They insist had to be obtained outside of Thailand, is a case of try if you want , but the rule is outside of Thailand. If that wasn't the case then on the e visa application the location would include Thailand...logical really. However I did have an agent offer to get me the non o retirement 90 day..and the 1 year extension at the Same time if I was prepared to fly from udon thani to bankok. Meet their agent, would set up bank account, phone and the 15 months

You apply for a visa from a Thai embassy. There are no Thai embassies in Thailand. You need to leave Thailand and apply through the e-visa system once you're in the jurisdiction of a Thai embassy. Laos is the closest and fastest, but requires you to print out a QR code after submitting the visa application and taking it to the embassy in person to pay. Normal processing time is 2-3 business days after paying.

Vietnam is another popular option that's nearby. You can do the entire process online on Vietnam, but it takes a little longer, maybe a week or so.
