Hi all,

does anyone have experience applying for dtv or retirement visa from South Africa? 

I'm based in Cape Town, no Thai embassy.  Closest embassy is Pretoria.

Is physical presence at the embassy required or can everything be done online?

Everything is done online. Some embassies do call people in for an interview but I’ve not seen any posts about Pretoria doing that.
