TLDR : Answer Summary
A person in Spain is inquiring about obtaining a 6-month visa for Thailand using their Australian passport. It's advised that they need a residence certificate to apply at the Thai Embassy in Madrid. Alternatively, they can enter Thailand on a 30-day visa exemption, extend it once for another 30 days, then travel to Laos to obtain a 60-day single-entry tourist visa. Another option suggested is to return to Australia to get a multi-entry tourist visa from a Thai consulate, enabling multiple 60-day stays.

Fly home to Australia - Get a Thailand multi-entry Tourist visa at a Thai Consulate good for 6 months of 60 day stays

as he will only achieve 180 days in one year from my suggested approach, i think he will be fine

- but your way can more easily be denied - at one point or another as Thai Immigration pursues their announced plan of keeping people from living in Thailand on back to back Tourist Visas and Exempt Entries

that's the other option. Keep in mind - the extensions inside TH are not overly costly. Only the trip to a consulate outside of TH is. Compare to costs of flying back Australia to the costs of doing the option I offered. The time of stay in TH you will get out of both is just the same

option is, fly to Thailand, enter by 30-day visa exempt, extend it one time inside Thailand for another 30 days. Then go to Vientiane, Laos, and get a 60 day plus 30 Single Entry Tourist Visa. after that, exit and come back and get another 3o day exempt. After this you should refrain from leaving & entering for a couple of months . and the door is open again

@El***
, I think they cannot apply for a tourist visa from the thai consulate in Madrid

On the pdf file about tourist visas it says this:

Si no dispone de residencia legal en España, NO puede solicitar visado de turista en este consulado. <- In google translates that says:

If you do not have legal residence in Spain, you can NOT apply for a visa of tourist in this consulate. :O :(

Why not get single entry tourist visa during staying in Spain for the first trip to Thailand?

Than you can not apply for the Multiple entry Visa, but you can apply for the Single Entry Tourist Visa.
